We had the good fortune of connecting with Daphane Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daphane, why did you pursue a creative career?
Just like The Fool in the tarot deck, I am full of unlimited potential while traveling through the unknown. Realizing that I was indeed an artist changed my perspective. We often think of artists as the “fine arts kids”, but throughout my journey I learned an artist is actually someone who lives their truth. They paint their life with excursions of self. Fulfilling every fantasy they dreamed of. I tried career after career and nothing stuck. Channeling my shadow side guided me to the revelation that there is nothing wrong with just existing. There is nothing wrong with trying everything you always wanted to do, and if it can make you money that’s cool, if not, that’s cool too. When you get bored, move on to the next thing that piqued your interest.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Never give up. Always keep searching for yourself. This work has led me in all types of directions. I started a Birth and Postpartum Doula Business and in return I learned so much about myself and the world. Birth is full of life and death. The “death” of the Maiden who is now a Mother. The “death” of myself after witnessing the creation of life through the Portal. The “birth” of the Mother and the physical birth of the infant. It changes who you are forever. There is more to this life than the everyday drama we tend to. Currently I am training for the Houston Half Marathon in January. I have never been a runner, but I am guiding myself through the “death” of what I am capable of. Always expanding who I am throughout my journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city are The Galleria Food Truck Park, Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, MKT in the Heights, Black Swan Yoga, Heights Mercantile, and Rice Village.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost we have to thank God for everything. Secondly, the person who helped me with my journey is my friend Mercedes. Mercedes is an Intuitive Life Coach. She helped me realize so much of my potential when I was in a depressive episode. We worked through a lot of my blocks and shadows and I realized I was actually my biggest hater. I was blaming everyone for things that I was in control of. I had to put on my big girl panties and get to work on myself. I thank her every chance I get!
