We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Weinberger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Typically, when families seek outside education support services, they do so to address an acute struggle their student(s) may be experiencing at the moment. In other words, a family may seek out a math tutor when their child receives a series of poor grades in his or her math class. Too often, however, the poor grades in math class are more of an outcome of a larger problem rather than an issue tackling math concepts. To make matters worse, when the family hires a math tutor, it may appear to solve the immediate problem. The math grade may improve in the short term, but often falls again after some time. This is because the original problem was misidentified and the math tutor was just a band-aid. The actual problem is more than likely a bigger issue tied to underdeveloped executive functioning (EF) skills. Had the student sought help for improving his or her organization, time management, study skills, etc., he or she would be addressing the lack of skills at the foundation of the problem. In other words, the real problem lies in poor self-management and EF skills. Strengthening these skills help students conquer the problem at hand while empowering them with the skills they need to avoid future issues across all of their classes. In fact, these skills are more closely tied to long-term success. Folks outside of the educational support industry should be sure they are seeking the right support for their struggling children.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Staying Ahead of the Game LLC is now the largest academic coaching and tutoring company serving the Greater Houston Area. Our expert team of academic coaches and tutors work closely with students all over Texas to help them achieve to their full potential in school and beyond. While we offer traditional subject tutoring for all subjects K-12 and standardized test prep, our flagship program is our award-winning and proprietary executive function (EF) curriculum. In an attempt to amplify our efforts in spreading the power of EF skills, we also regularly support schools all over the country by delivering engaging workshops and presentations for educators and parents. We are especially proud to have helped found a sister company called Illuminos LLC to spread the power of EF skills to major cities outside of Texas. Illuminos’ headquarters is located in Northern Virginia and services the Washington DC Metro Area.

Growing these companies has not been an easy process full of sugar, spice, and everything nice. It has been a long road full of learning experiences. However, we attribute our ongoing growth and success to our relentless commitment to our mission of helping all students achieve to their full potential both inside and outside the classroom. We believe learning is a life-long process, and we continue to learn as much from our students and strategic partners as they learn from us!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston has SO much to offer! I would dedicate a day to showing them NASA, the Houston-based hub for space exploration. I would dedicate a day to showing them around the Houston Galleria, which is one of the top shopping malls in the country. As the restaurant capital of the country, I would take them to several of the seminal restaurants that make Houston magical. From steakhouses like Vic & Anthony’s and Steak 48 to Tex-Mex places like El Tiempo and Pappasito’s Cantina to Brazilian hotspots like Chama Gaucha, Houston is full of amazing food options. I would dedicate several evenings to exciting bar scenes in Houston around Washington, Midtown, Downtown, etc. Houston has a lively sports scene, so I would take them to a Texans, Astros, or Rockets game. Finally, I would dedicate a couple days to exploring the different parts of town that have so much culture and character with ethnic food and drink from all over the world.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My passion for my work and companies come from my own childhood academic struggles, and I must give credit to my parents. My father was a clinical psychologist who specialized in adolescents and identified my learning differences from a very young age; my mother spent countless hours with me as a child helping me to build the soft skills I lacked to appropriately juggle the growing demands of school. Now that I have dedicated my life and companies to helping other students avoid the same struggles, I can personally attest to the power of executive function (EF) skills. I would not be where I am today without their relentless commitment to helping me learn how to learn. While my family had to piece together the support I needed to address my various struggles in school, I have dedicated my life to offering many of these educational support services under one roof. I am proud to say my growing companies now have over 130 academic coaches working closely with struggling students to help them be the best version of themselves as possible.
