We had the good fortune of connecting with Daria Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daria, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
That would be one thing that I myself was unaware when starting my photography business – that working on photographs (shooting/editing) takes only about 10% of my time. The other 90% is networking, marketing, advertising, client relations, scheduling. A lot of business related things I had to learn and embrace.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The goal of every photo session is to create a product clients love. The way to achieve that is to listen to what our clients are looking for. So there is always a consultation, where we determine what colors and what mood we are looking for, brainstorm about the outfits (if any), accessories, other props. The color of your eyes, hair, your favorite flowers, your style, the things you do, the things you’d rather do – all of that is taken into consideration when planning your photo session. It’s one of my favorite parts of creative process – to envision, to plan, to find and position all the puzzle pieces, only to bring the beautiful you into that space, and then click the shutter. As many times as needed

Sometimes clients come in saying  – there is nothing in particular that I want, I just want to look beautiful. And this is when I can go all out and call on one of the hundreds ideas that live rent free in my mind waiting for their chance to obtain a physical form. And we create beauty together.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best time ever is different for everyone, so my best friend and I might end up somewhere on the outskirts of Houston. I would take them for a stroll and swim (and some beautiful photos) to Galveston. Lots of rustic looking buildings, back alleys, deserted places. Train Depot. Tall ship Elissa. Elissa is actually on my to-photograph list. Maybe I’ll do a family photo session there next month.

I love long walks along the Buffalo Bayou or Houston Aquarium, if the kids are involved. Getting lost in the Arboretum. Edith Moore sanctuary. Kleb Woods Nature Preserve. Visit some goats at Blue Heron Farm, and then some ponies at Paloma Trails.

My favorite eatery has been Tout Suite lately. Because – good soup, and – fresh macarons!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am very thankful to one of my photographer friends for introducing me to fine art photography some years ago. Without seeing how genuine and emotive photographs can be I may not have an idea of what to reach for. Thankful for my teachers, both in photography and movement worlds. Learning technical aspects of making a photograph was just as important as learning how express myself through dance. I want to give a shoutout to an amazing Hunter Dance Center where I danced through the dark times of covid. Using different formats and mediums their wonderful teachers guide you in a journey of movement and self-exploration, a journey so delicate and thrilling, that you never want to come back from.
