We had the good fortune of connecting with Dashna Compere and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dashna, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I think a balance life is essential for personal development, productivity and sanity. I am one of those individuals who’s life depends on ” to do lists”; a habit I developed way back in middle school. My to do list started out with ” the top three things that I need to complete during the day”. However, as I became older, embarked on new journeys, the list grew. Now, it is divided into two portions- My personal matters and my son’s affairs. My balance have changed because I now have to juggle between work life and being a mother to my handsome newborn son. I’ve prayed for years for my womb to be blessed with a child; a son to be specific. I almost gave up the past two years, but God favored me and answered my prayers. I embrace this change. I think it’s the most rewarding thing in my life. I think focus is important for a healthy balance. Sloppiness is not acceptable nor tolerable.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Between you and I, I am still trying to construct a sentence that will define my professional life. Let’s see, I am a Dental professional, an entrepreneur, a traveler, a blogger, a columnist, a writer, and an event planner, As much as I would love to tell you more about each area of my life, I think it’s best that we bring focus to just motherhood within entrepreneurship. In this “bag securing” world, the one thing that sets me apart is my magnetic personality. This is a gift that I thank God for every day. Everyone who knows me well, or have worked close with me can attest that there is a ” Je ne sais quoi” about me (some call it vibe, energy, aura- I call it gift). It’s more than just the money for me; it’s a passion. The thing i’m most proud of as an entrepreneur would have to be growth. The ability to endure when I thought I was going to bend is a great deal for me. Seeing my business develop, is a great deal for me. The strength to embrace motherhood is a huge deal for me. Not only has growth shaped me into a better person, it has given me the experience needed to teach others. I did not become an entrepreneur overnight. It took time, consistency and education. It was not easy but it was doable. There were and still are some challenges as I journey on this road. My newest challenge is balancing my professional life and motherhood. I don’t have the answer to everything, but I do pray about everything. Prayer is the only way I know how to overcome any challenges I face. I would love the world to see a black Haitian mother who is dedicated to making a difference in the world one life at a time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate a great deal of my success to my mentors- Kedy Compere ( my father and my best friend), Bishop T.D Jakes( I must have almost every book he wrote) Marie Damier ( my business partner), Jim John ( motivational speaker). I have to say that I am blessed to know some astonishing individuals. My group of friends are rare. I love and appreciate each and everyone of them. They’ve all contribute in some way or form to who I am today.
