We had the good fortune of connecting with Akeel Bernard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akeel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The decision to embark on the journey of starting my own business as a Certified Life Transition Coach was deeply rooted in a personal tragedy that reshaped the trajectory of my life. At the tender age of 28, I experienced a heart-wrenching loss – my youngest brother was tragically taken from us. This devastating event marked a profound turning point, not just in my personal life but in my professional aspirations as well.

The grief I grappled with following my brother’s passing became a catalyst for a profound shift towards intentionality. In the midst of sorrow, I found a newfound perspective on the brevity and preciousness of life. It was during this time of profound reflection that I recognized the transformative power of intentional living, prompting me to channel my grief into a passionate commitment to help others navigate life’s challenges.

The birth of my coaching practice, grounded in intentionality, emerged from a desire to provide a space for individuals to work through the obstacles they face. My personal experience of loss fueled a deep passion for life – not just in terms of surviving but thriving with purpose. I realized that through intentional living, individuals could transform their challenges into opportunities for growth and resilience.

In essence, my coaching practice is not merely a profession but a heartfelt commitment to weaving intentionality into the fabric of people’s lives. From the depths of grief, a passion for life emerged, compelling me to support others on their journey towards intentional living, resilience, and mental well-being. Through this business, I strive to honor my brother’s memory by helping others find purpose and strength amidst life’s challenges.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business Intentionally Rooted is a testament to my dedication to fostering purposeful living and resilience through life transitions. What distinguishes my coaching practice is its genuine foundation, rooted in the belief in intentional living and personal growth.

I take pride in witnessing the positive impact Intentionally Rooted Coaching & Consulting has on individuals navigating life’s transitions. The joy and fulfillment that come from seeing clients embrace intentional living and undergo personal transformations are truly remarkable. My coaching practice isn’t just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about thriving in the face of challenges and finding strength in vulnerability.

The journey to where I am today has been a dynamic mix of challenges and triumphs. Establishing a business rooted in authenticity required a commitment to sharing my coaching philosophy. While the path wasn’t always easy, every challenge became an opportunity for growth and refining my coaching approach.

One of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way is the power of vulnerability. Opening up about my challenges with my own mental, physical and emotional health has not only connected me to my clients on a deeper level, it’s also the foundation of which my work is built on. Challenges are inevitable, but my belief is that these challenges are steppingstones towards living a life of purpose and intentionality.

I am also proud to align my business with Impact Hub Houston, a community dedicated to fostering positive change through entrepreneurship. Intentionally Rooted is a part of the collective effort towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically focusing on Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, and Goal 4: Quality Education. Through coaching, I contribute to individuals’ mental well-being and personal development, aligning with the broader mission of creating a sustainable and equitable future.

In essence, Intentionally Rooted is more than a coaching service; it’s a movement towards intentional living, resilience, and personal growth. My brand represents a commitment to creating a positive impact in the lives of individuals and contributing to a community that values authenticity, vulnerability, and intentional living.

As we continue this journey, I invite the world to join me in embracing intentional living, acknowledging the strength within vulnerability, and celebrating the resilience that emerges from life’s transitions. Together, let’s cultivate purposeful living by living lives that are Intentionally Rooted.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friends were rolling into Houston for a visit, you better believe we’d be on a mission to have the time of our lives! Picture this: a week packed with the best food, art, and vibes that H-Town has to offer. Here’ s how we’d make this adventure legendary:

Coffee with a side of Social Impact: Coffee at my favorite local coffee shop Slowpokes, is a great start to any day. Slowpokes is the neighborhood coffee joint that not only serves fantastic brews but also invests in community programs – because a cup of coffee that gives back is always a win.

The Breakfast Klub Kickstart: We’d kick off our mornings at The Breakfast Klub because their wings and waffles are practically a morning ritual – and trust me, they’re a game-changer.

A memorable dinner at Bungalow: A leisurely Dinner at Bungalow has to be on the agenda. Apart from the amazing food, and impeccable customer service the ambiance is simply beautiful.

Art for Change: A trip to Houston’s Museum District, to visit the Houston Museum of African American Culture, is a treat for those looking to soak in powerful exhibits that not only inspire but also foster dialogue on social issues. To conclude our day of cultural enrichment a visit to The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, a place where history comes alive, celebrating the legacy of African American soldiers.

A Trip to Houston’s vibrant Project Row Houses: A trip to Houston is incomplete without a trip to one of the city’s most historic landmarks in one of its oldest African American neighborhoods. – The Project Row Houses occupies a significant footprint in Houston’s Historic Third Ward, the site encompasses five city blocks and houses 39 structures that serve as a home base to a variety of community-enriching initiatives, art programs, and neighborhood development activities.

Jazz in the Jungle at Eden: A trip to Eden Plant Co. on Harrisburg Boulevard in Houston. to immerse yourself in the enchanting sounds of jazz while surrounded by the beauty of nature is what I call a great night. I don’t have the words to explain how amazing of an experience this is. You simply have to experience it yourself. Make sure to secure your tickets early they sell out quickly.

This, my friend, is the Houston adventure – a blend of soulful experiences, delicious bites, and a journey through the cultural tapestry that makes our city shine.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In the vibrant tapestry of my life, there’s a singular thread that not only shaped my journey but continues to guide my every step – my beloved baby brother, Terrell Downs. As I share my story with Shoutout HTX, I am compelled to dedicate this shoutout to the force of love, resilience, and inspiration that Terrell was and still is in my life.

Terrell, despite departing from this physical realm in 2017, remains an everlasting presence in my heart. His radiant spirit, infectious laughter, and unwavering support have been the driving force behind the work I do as a Certified Life Transition Coach. It is to him that I owe my profound understanding of the transformative power of intentional living.

In the face of Terrell’s untimely departure, I discovered an unyielding passion for life and an earnest commitment to helping others navigate their own transitions. His memory fuels my determination to create a positive impact in the lives of those who seek guidance through their personal challenges.
