We had the good fortune of connecting with Daveed Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daveed, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When we first started our band, our thought process was just to express ourselves by making great music and having fun jamming out with others. However, as time went on, and as people started takin interest in us and inviting us to play at venues, our mindset shifted one from entertainment, to a more professional mindset. With this thought process in place, we plan to monetize ourselves rather than counting on others, either by recording music and possibly making money with that, or by going to venues and performing for money. Of course, we know that being able to live off of music is based mostly on luck instead of skill nowadays, however, with time and dedication, we believe we can go the distance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For SUMRS, I believe that our most redeeming and unique quality is our originality. Instead of starting out doing covers, we went straight into creating songs and learning from there, and, because we have such vast experiences and tastes in music, we are able to make a different sound that isn’t as common. We got to where we were by just working hard on our music, having fun, and, most importantly, getting lucky. With ought those traits, we wouldn’t have anything.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d most likely take them to different parts of Texas, for example, going out to San Antonio and heading to Six Flags and then after the riverwalk since it’s so fun to hang out and have a good time. If it’s here in Houston, however, I’d most likely bring them to the Mr. Pixel’s classic arcade and have some fun playing those old retro games. Another good place to go if they wanna have a more wild night is to go to the White Oak Music Hall and see if some local bands are playing there, since it’s always cool to enjoy the scene there. After White Oak, it’s always a tradition to go eat at CiCi’s Pizza, so we would most likely do that.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course, our shoutout is to all our friends and family that have been there to support us and help us with our band.
