We had the good fortune of connecting with David Michael Wyatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David Michael, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man; but sooner or later the man who wins is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN”. – Thinking by Walter Wintle
This poem has been a foundation for my thinking for years. I am a firm believer if I don’t believe in me then no one else will. We live in a world where we often miss the the process of “the work” and we only see peoples finished products. This makes it easy to be discouraged and compare your journey to others. Reading this poem reminds that I belong in the room and there is space for me as long as I can believe. It’s become clear to me over the years that healthy thinking is one of the most important principals to being successful in anything.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others? I think people can feel what’s real and that’s what they can connect with. Although my music is not considered gospel music I still think God uses me to provide a space for people to reflect, heal and go inward. I like to call it Velvet Vibes. It is my joy to share, feel what’s in the room and sing from that very present moment.
Right now I am most proud of the body of work we produced. My current EP is called “The Reprise”. I am excited to see what all the EP will turn into. Also excited to share the songs with the world. So let me know what you think!
How did I get where I am today professionally? Great people trusting me with their platforms and giving me opportunities to sing.
EASY!? Of course not! Nothing worth having ever is, right? It’s still a daily fight to become greater. I overcome this by trying to make it a practice to just keep showing up. What showing up looks like for me is trying everyday to push the dream forward and allowing myself to feel the whole process. Because this makes me appreciate the fruit when I finally hold it in my hand.
Lessons I’ve learned along the way are don’t stop at the word “NO”. Be persistent in the things you want to see because everybody won’t see your vision. Lastly, keep people who believe in you enough to tell you the real truth and hold you accountable to it around you.
I am not even sure my introverted mind will allow me to answer this. (LOL) I guess that I am a real introverted person who is often in the spaces that require me to do extroverted things. I am super chill, love chilling with my family and my lil best friend, (my four year old son) (LOL)! On the flip side I am hype to meet ALL OF YOU! (HAHAH)
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
(HAHA) My best friends already know that is not a responsibility they want to put in my lap. I would be totally fine sitting in the house chilling. But for the sake of being a good host, I’ll put on my extroverted boots and we would certainly finds ourselves downtown at the Breakfast Klub for some amazing breakfast. For lunch we could swing by Mobetta Brews, Museum district is also vibe to check out. For a pit stop we can stop by Through Good Coffee before doing dinner at Kulture Houston. I have several friends who are on the Live music Houston scene so we would certainly find ourselves at somebody show!! Also, I am a father to a toddler, so they already know we about to be going down somebody slide at a kids play place like Kanga’s, or Urban Air! (LOL)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a list of people that I’m fortunate to have in my life that believe in my dreams. All of these people have aided in my dream and still continue to push me and provide opportunities for me to be a successful artist. I can start with my mom always making a way for me as a kid to have a seat in church and getting to choir rehearsal. Because of this I fell in love with singing and music. In my adult years there are several people who have mentored, poured and provided spaces for me to grow and find my way as an artist. Brian Courtney Wilson, Rudy Rasmus, Isaac Pitre, Montell Jordan, and Tobe Nwigwe. They all have become extended family to me. But, I would be foolish to not mention and dedicate this shoutout to the greatest blessing in my life. MY WIFE SHAWN FLOWERS WYATT! She has been one of my greatest inspirations.
