We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawine Dacosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawine, tell us about what you do. How did your business start? Has it been an easy process? What do you want the world to know about your brand?
I am an independent publicist. Public Relations (PR for short) is the act of building & maintaining a favorable public image of a company, organization, or brand. Everyone has a story to tell, they just may not know how tell…that’s where I come in. My job is to shape the image of clients I work with, improve visibility and more! Like most entrepreneurs during this time, my business was born out of the pandemic. Here’s a little education background. In 2017, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and I’m currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Public Relations. After and during undergrad, I worked in the field for a bit before my job conducted layoffs which led me to teaching. After about 2 years, I realized I wanted to what I enjoyed – public relations; however, it was so hard to actually find a job so I created my own. I have always wanted to have my own business but not being able to find one was the propelling force that caused me to step out on faith and actually do it. One major lesson that I have learned so far is that it is okay to not know everything right away. It’s okay to not be an expert. Give yourself room and patience to learn and grow. I’m a believer in hardwork, prayer, and consistency. With those three things, you can’t go wrong. It hasn’t been an easy process but I love it. I love storytelling, I love the process of being able to unearth and pull back the layers of a client’s story and create a strategic plan to reach their PR goals whether it’s gaining visibility, earning credibility or increasing awareness. Whatever it is, I look forward to helping others tell their story! For me, it’s not about the money. It’s about helping others see the value in what they have to offer and to help them tell their story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmm… that’s a great question. I love to eat so there’s a number of places I would probably want to take them. For breakfast, we would probably go to Snooze or The Breakfast Club. After breakfast, we would head over to Hermann Park to walk off the food we ate for breakfast. Then, we would go to City Centre for lunch and to visit all of the cute stores there. I’d imagine I would be tired after all of the walking around so we would rest for a bit and take a nap before dinner. I live near the Galleria so I would probably find a restaurant near by, just depends on what we’re in the mood to eat.

Whew, that’s just day 1. I’d definitely cook for the rest of the week, I wouldn’t eat out every day. Some other great places to visit would be:
• Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
• Ice at the Galleria
• Third Ward (to see Project Row Houses)
• Downtown Aquarium (the food is amazing)
• Woodlands (so much to do and see)
• Houston Museum District

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a number of people I would like to dedicate my shoutout to as so many have played an essential part in my success. I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to God, my husband, my mom, my pastors, & my ministry, Refuge Temple Ministries. God has been a constant & consistent source in my life. I’m beyond grateful for His faithfulness, direction, love, correction & everything He has shown Himself to be in my life. Andy, my husband, has been so supportive and is a trooper. He has listened to all of my overthinking, all my questions, and more. He had been very encouraging since the beginning! I’m so grateful. My mom has always taught me that whatever I desire to do and become in life, I can do it. There are no limits to anything I aspire to do. She has always looked for ways to support me. Before my website was even completely up, she had already shared it with pretty much all her contacts. Lastly, pastors and my church, Refuge Temple Ministries. I’ve learned so much in the past 6 years, it’s amazing. I’m so grateful God led me to this ministry and to meet people that have encouraged me along the way, supported me, and loved me. They are just as much my family as my natural family. Thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far. I love and appreciate each and every one of you!
