We had the good fortune of connecting with Delma Gomes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Delma, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business started, out of boredom and wanting to do something during quarantine period. My first thought was to make some homemade ice cream , for summer ( and mostly targeting people from my country ). Later on , some close friends and family suggested me to add Sth to it ( charutos — donuts sticks ), to make it as a combo. Further down , some people wanted homemade cakes , and that’s how everything started .
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is the best one, jokes. I make sweets for sweet people all over the world. I am proud to say that I always try hard to deliver the best to my customers. From the moment I take an order, I make sure that I’ll do everything in my power to deliver something nice. I only got to where I am , from making mistakes. Mistakes are not always a negative thing. I have learned to accept people’s opinions even if I don’t like it at first. I try to see the best out of every feedbacks ( even if they are not the best ones ). I believe that there is always room for improvement. Every business owner would agree with me that it’s not always essay to get everything running , when you are the one doing it all by yourself. 1- It takes time. Patient, hard work and consistency are the key to achieve great results. Resilience comes handy in this aspect. 2- being honest about the pricing and the quality. 3- be humble , it takes humility to receive so many bad feedbacks and not take it personal… learn from mistakes and move on. 4- Be original and stay creative. I want the world to know that , anyone can start from nothing to something. Regardless of what you have going on , you can always the narrative and dive into the next adventure.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Love me some Houston. I would take people to the Japanese garden ( I love everything about it ), the millennial garden, Houston Museum of natural Sciences , and so many areas around downtown. Visit the Kemal boardwalk , and let’s not forget to visit NASA as well , I mean it’s Houston. My favorite place to eat it’s for sure seafood , 88 Boiling Crawfish, Hiccups & Churroholics for some Thai food , and Emporio Brazilian Cafe. One of my fave things to get too , is ice cream , and nothing is better than Pina Colada twirl from Twistee Treats .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh God , the list is huge. But I’ll start with my parents of course , Bia and Casy. My family and friends: Vanilson, Nilton ,Eri, Marlena, Mima, Melania , Januario, Eugenia,Jerusa, Selma, Meta , Montes, Denise , Marisa ,Gabson, Beatriz, Rita ,Luisa , Gercia , Marcia, Ilda, Gilsa and so many others that I won’t be able to mention here. All of them helped me so much. I received so many compliments and constructive criticism from them. Lilly, Amada, all of their feedbacks helped to get when I am.
