We had the good fortune of connecting with DeQuindra Rouzan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeQuindra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

My thought process behind starting my own business was centered around providing an elevated experience for women of color. At the tender age of 12it was apparent the makeup options for women of color was very limited. As a budding makeup artist, I would provided beauty services to my close friends and family prior to opening my business. My clientele consist of women who wear little to no makeup. While exploring options, I noticed the color range was either too red, orange, and/or too light leaving a grayish tint which understandably caused most people to hesitate. As an entrepreneur, I identified the problem and presented a solution. Thus Faces of Virtue Beauty Studio was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

As a makeup artist, I am tasked with creating beauty for my clients. My services are set apart from other artists by elevating beauty looks as oppose to transforming my clients. I’ve built my reputation and clientele around the foundational qualities of being honest, transparent, and relatable. It was not an easy journey to arrive where I am today. I was born and raised in a small rural community in poverty. I became a mother at the age of 16 and a high school drop out. Through sheer perseverance, I overcame my challenges. I received my GED, enrolled in college, graduated hair and graduate school. I now have a Masters of Business Administration and the founder of a successful beauty business. I’ve learned SEVERAL lessons along the way. The most important lesson is to keep God in everything you do and let him guide and direct your path. Most importantly stay humble! Faces of Virtue Beauty Studio is a product of that perseverance! Our belief is to elevate as oppose to transform beauty. I manage a team of 21 hair and makeup artists.  We are the makeup partners for the NFL and NBA entertainment squad in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition, we service over 124 weddings per year.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My first stop would be a New Orleans Saints or Pelicans game! My favorite place to eat would be Sweet Soul Food and we would hang out on Magazine Street for vintage shopping and viewing art galleries. We would also take a short trip to Luling, LA to visit one of my favorite shops–the Basketry. Of course, we would stop in a spruce up at Faces of Virtue Beauty Studio before listening to live music at Cafe Instanbul.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are several people who help Faces of Virtue become what it is today. First and foremost, God set the path for me to follow! Secondly,  my loving and devoted husband, Eugene! He is my biggest supporter, driver, confidant, and the REAL MVP of Faces of Virtue. My children are also my biggest supporters, and lastly my talented team of artists and hairstylists. Faces of Virtue could not be as successful as it is without the loyalty and commitment of my awesome team!
