We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Clarke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derek, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind any success story is to follow ones own instincts. I’ve been pursuing painting, but the joy I get is in knowing that this is the one place where I can do everything my way. I paint what I feel in that moment, and it’s on my own schedule. Because of that, I believe my art gets the attention from me that it deserves. It may not be the best approach in today’s fast paced world, but I have to trust my instincts and be as genuine to my art as I can. I believe that it reflects in my work, which only helps me in the long-run.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My paint style is a bit of a mixed bag, but I suppose you can think of me as a Contemporary Abstract Expressionist. Music plays a huge role in my work because of a condition known as synesthesia – a condition where you see color out of music. I’m excited to show the world what I hear and feel. I view each painting as my own song. My biggest goal, above all else, is for people to view my work in person at least once. I liken the experience as when you hear you’re favorite song played live by your favorite performer. I believe my paintings give off a different energy when viewed in person. It’s my soul speaking in color.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely have to visit NASA. It’s a must. And the foods in Houston is amazing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Hands down, my shoutout goes to my wife, my muse. I paint out of passion. But no one else would know I paint if it wasn’t for my wife. She’s been so unbelievably supportive an encouraging of my dream. I love her and thank her so much.
