We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree Dominguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desiree, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was for me to be true to who I was called to be. I have held this desire to have my own business and use it for better. I’ve always wanted to be able to do my part in helping others, and for me, that has always been through the beauty industry. So, in better words, I am striving to use my business as a tool not only for myself, but to be a light to others.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So, I actually have two side hustles that have been lifelong dreams of mine. First, makeup artistry. I have been doing makeup for clients for over 10 years now. It started in middle school, and I would do makeup on my classmates and that slowly just gave me more confidence to practice and learn and cultivate my skills. However, it has been an off and on thing for me over the last decade, but I always have found myself coming back to it. That being said, I have learned that when something is meant for you, you will always find a way to make it work out. Within the beauty industry, I think the most challenging thing is actually believing in yourself and your craft. It is so easy to submit to imposter syndrome and think because you aren’t where others are in their career, that you aren’t good enough, but that’s far from truth. I’ve learned to understand that there is so much space in the beauty industry, and no one can dismiss you from being in that space. So, stay strong, and stay true to who you are as an artist. Secondly, I have finally created my own cosmetic brand, Desyr Cosmetics. This has been a dream of mine since I was young. And it took me reaching a very low place as a 29-year-old woman, to just get up, and put it into fruition. Even when I didn’t know a thing about starting a business. If you were to tell me as a teenager, you’re going to finally do it, I wouldn’t believe you. But yet, here I am, teaching myself the ins and outs of what it takes to be a business owner. Every day is a new day to grow, learn, and keep following the dream. So that makes me proud of myself for following through with what I envisioned for myself as a young girl, and I’m excited to see my growth and success, because I will continue to grow and I will succeed.

What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that there is beauty even in the chaos, and as long as you are doing things with a pure heart, you will always be fruitful. The right people, the right clients, the right customers will reach you and support you because they believe in you. I want to be able to use my talent and my business to be a blessing to others, even if it’s in a small way, that small way to one person might be a big gesture for someone else.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, this is a fun question! If I had a friend visiting Houston, I would definitely take them to Snooze, that is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast. Specifically, the one in the Heights. There are actually so many delicious places to eat here in Houston, and it’s so diverse, so there’s absolutely something for everyone. Food spots, here’s my list of my go-to’s…Snooze AM Eatery, La Chingada Tacos & Tequila, Moon Rabbit, Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Gloria’s Latin Cuisine, 3 Little Pigs Ramen, Alma in the Heights, Tacos Doña Lena. That’s just to name a few. To hang out and drink, a cute little speakeasy named Meo Bar inside of Wokker on Airline is such a vibe. I also appreciate POST, all of the food options and they have 2 bars inside, is such a good place to go when you don’t know what you want to eat. I also love POST because they have different events all the time, and it’s attached to 713 Music Hall so there’s sometimes concerts and shows going on. Other than food, Meow Wolf is a great place for photos, so is Seismique which is a really cool art museum. There’s Andretti Indoor Karting & Gaming in Katy, and there are so many fun spots for pickleball! For this Texas heat, swimming is always an option for me, so if there’s a pool, I’m in, especially if it’s at the Texas-shaped lazy river on the rooftop of the Marriott. That is definitely a vibe for a weekend!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh, absolutely! There are quite a few that have contributed to me to follow my passions. First and foremost, I attribute all of my talent and drive to God. Without Him, I don’t think I would be who I am as a whole. Of course I need to include my parents, without them I wouldn’t be so strong-minded to get things done and be pushed to the best of my abilities while also being my #1 support system! The next person I can dedicate my shoutout to is my art teacher from school, Orissa Bey. Even now, as an adult, we’ve stayed connected and she still gives me words of praise and encouragement. She really helped me cultivate this love for art, and that has shown through in my love for makeup, makeup artistry, and creating a cosmetic line. Without her, school wouldn’t have been so great, and I truly appreciate being a student of hers. Along with those personal recognitions, I have to give recognition and credit to the many, many other small businesses and freelance makeup artists who I’ve admired throughout my teenage and adult years! Seeing other women, pursue their dreams and make their passions a career has been so motivating and inspiring.
