We had the good fortune of connecting with Sneha Dama and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sneha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was an idea I found fascinating while growing up. I always had this feeling that I was going to run my own business but didn’t know when that would be or what it would look like! All I knew was that the special ‘aha’ day will come and things will slowly start to make sense and fall into place. During my years of education, I looked into many career options trying to find the perfect, stable 9-5 job; however, in each of those roles I always saw myself coming back to the one thing that I was passionate about – dance. I have been a dancer in the Houston, TX area for over 20 years and can never imagine a day without it! Throughout life’s highs and lows, dance has been the one constant and what has got me to where I am today. I then thought to myself – if this art can have such a positive impact in my life, there surely must be a way for me to pass it on to others! I decided to take the leap of faith and simply START. Once I adapted that mindset, all the creative juices started flowing and voila, we have Sunrise Dance!
What should our readers know about your business?
Sunrise Dance is specialized in Wedding and Event Choreography! From coordinating the Bride and Groom’s magical First Dances to choreographing corporate functions to hosting workshops to creating family skits, and much more – Sunrise customizes routines tailored to each of our clients’ needs ensuring that their vision is brought to life. My goal with Sunrise Dance is to be able to create a platform that leads individuals to discover their story through the expression of dance along with creating a unique, memorable experience for all my clients! I believe each performance has a story to tell and watching my clients share that story through their movement is what I get the most excited about! In fact, I recently came back from an event where I happened to run into an old client whom I had taught a father daughter dance routine to. The father couldn’t stop smiling in excitement about how all his friends thought he was so cool and that he danced so well! It’s comments like these that drive me to keep going!
Overall, the one thing that I am the most proud of is the fact that I just started. When I decided to shut off all those inner voices giving me a million reasons of not to do this, I listened to that one feeling that told me I was meant to do this. That mindset doesn’t come easily though, it comes with a lot of patience, belief and faith in yourself.
A lot of pressure comes from jumping into the creative, entrepreneurial journey. It’s a tough fight but I really do believe that if you put in the right mindset, your heart and soul, you are truly unstoppable and you’ll continue to Rise and Shine which is what Sunrise Dance is all about! The biggest lesson I’ve learned and continue to overcome everyday is that sometimes not everything will go as you plan. You have to learn to let things go and fail not once but multiple times in order to move forward. Failure by no means is a sign to stop, it’s how you overcome that failure and move forward that makes you stronger, and that is something that I hope to inspire to others through dance!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooo this is absolutely one of my favorite things to do! (Other than dancing of course haha) I love discovering the new spots in the Houston area and more over, showing people around the city!
The eating and drinking culture in Houston is super huge and I’m here for it! Each area offers a unique vibe which I would dedicate a whole day to! If I were to explain a whole week on here, this may end up being a 5 page essay haha but I’ll narrow it down to 24 Hours in the city!
If my best friend was visiting the area, we would start off by grabbing a few drinks at Anvil, Under the Volcano, or MIss Carousel and then heading to what Houston/Texas does best – Tex Mex! You can’t go wrong with Ninfa’s on Navigation or El Tiempo. Some Fajitas and Margaritas – and that’s all you need! Some fun activities that one can do are exploring East Downtown and Heights areas, or a enjoy a nice evening walk by the Buffalo Bayou Park followed by Dinner at Coltivare, Moxie’s, or Kin Dee Thai Cuisine and finally – ending the evening with the most important meal of the day – Dessert!
There are so many spots – a Classic Pizookie from BJ’s (which is my ultimate favorite), Flower and Cream, Chocolate Bar and so much more! Additionally, some fun activities which I myself haven’t been to yet are the Seismique Art Museum, FAO HTX (a retro style arcade bar) or Hungry like the Wolf (an 80s themed diner and bar!)
Houston is filled with tons of love, culture, and food and is constantly growing, and is one of the reasons I love this city!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Sunrise Dance would not have been here today without my support system!
My Family, Friends, Dance Gurus, and Mentor – Words can’t express enough of how blessed and appreciative I am that you all have continuously supported my dream and pushed me to achieve what I myself didn’t even think I was capable of. Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!
