We had the good fortune of connecting with Desmond Cameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Desmond, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I worked with a well-known national furniture company as a sales representative for over 10 years and dealt with moving and delivery companies who picked up our customers’ furniture for delivery. We had so many complaints about deliveries, such as poor customer service and damages. I have always wanted to have my own business and since I knew so much about the furniture business and also knew how to entreat customers in a professional way, letting them know that they are the most important asset to our business; also knowing how to entreat their furniture as if it was my own, I knew I could succeed in this business. I also wanted to make a change in the moving and delivery business, since customers were so dissatisfied with companies that were not personal and did not handle their furniture with care.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So many people have been impacted by Covid-19, which has caused many to lose their jobs, their homes, and even some family members. Through this they have had to move their furniture to storage or to other places of abode. It has brought us work, but we do empathize with those who have been so affected and pray for their peace in the midst of transitions from work and home, especially the negative. In our business, when someone calls for a quote, we consider the circumstances and situations we’re all presently going through. Sympathy and empathy is embedded in our upbringing; in our hearts. That’s why our quotes a very reasonable. Yes, we must give a quote that will also feed our workers and their families, so everyone is considered. We want to encourage others who may want to start a business of their own, but don’t feel they can. Set your goals and shoot for the stars. With prayer and work, you can make it happen. It may not be easy, but stay the course and keep on going. Let God be your guide. Never try to do it on your own. We started out purchasing a brand new truck. It was delivered to us with an oil leak. Every other month or so, we had to take it in for repairs. This went on for about nine months, when we decided to have the manufacturer take that truck back and remove our name from it altogether. Thank God, they agreed so we’re now free from that truck. We had to rent U-Haul trucks for another couple months while we waited for another purchase. Of course, this is very expensive because we had to pay daily rental and mileage costs. Sometimes negative situations will arise in your quest for a better life; having your own business, but look at those as stepping stones. You can overcome those issues and succeed if you persevere with much prayer.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Covid-19, this pandemic, has caused many fun places to be shut down, but in spite of that I would say there are still places our friends and visitors could go and have a great time, as long as they practice social distancing and wear a mask, such as Galveston Beach. It can be very relaxing to just get away for awhile and take a walk on the beach with your loved ones. Then there’s Discovery Green. It’s a lovely park with creative sculptures, a walking serenade, water features, small skate rink, playground, and many benches to sit and relax. It is a fun and vibrant experience with uplifting community events and the amazing Houston scenery.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give thanks to God for his leading and directions in my life. Without Him, I don’t know where I would be today. He is the one who made me His minister, directed me to Bible Teachers International, where I was trained fully in dealing with people righteously, honestly and with love, to the point where customers’ wellbeing are at the forefront and I deal with them as I would want to be dealt with. I also want to say thanks to RTG Furniture Store for allowing me the privilege of serving its customers. Because of us working together for many years, and their knowledge of my work ethics, I can now deliver furniture for them in a professional and timely manner. Shoutout to my wife and family who support us greatly in our efforts to provide this great service to Houston and surrounding areas, and especially to my son, Brandon, who works with us in the business.
