We had the good fortune of connecting with Destinie York and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destinie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since I could remember, I always had an entrepreneurial mindset and vision for my life. I’ve always been a go getter and just dreamed of being my own boss, making my own schedule, and being the face of my own brand. I always knew I would have a business, I just didn’t know what it would be. I brainstormed so many different businesses that I potentially wanted to start but I wasn’t passionate about any of them. Flash forward to the summer leading up to my sophomore year in college, I felt like it was my time to make a name for myself. I was tired of saying “next year I’ll start a business”. I had to ask myself “why not now?” I prayed to God multiple nights asking him to guide me to my purpose and to help me understand what my true passion is. Once I realized makeup was a huge passion of mine, I decided to just step out on faith and see where it goes. I was very anxious with the thought of providing a service and not a product, but I realized that I couldn’t trust that God would make this work and be scared at the same time so I simply just started with no fears. 2 years later, I couldn’t be more happy with the decision I made to start TheDestinedTouch.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I see the finish line and I do whatever it takes to get there. I embrace change, failures, and disappointments because I know where I am trying to go. By doing this, I become better at my own craft. Starting off in the makeup industry can be tough. It’s easy to get discouraged when thing are slow, like not having clients for example, but I learned that consistency is the key. Being consistent, even when you don’t like how an eyebrow came out or if you think you didn’t blend well enough, POST IT because it’s about the journey and the practice and disciple that matters. I chose to accept the fact that it’s always okay to get up and try again, you only master a skill through repetition.
There were many times when I started off doing makeup and even until recently, I would get discouraged due to the fact I couldn’t figure out what my signature makeup look. It would bother me because I wanted to be that artist to where you can point out that I did that look. However after continuously learning different tips and techniques as well as lot of practicing I am starting to get more confident and comfortable with doing makeup as I started finding my own way and my own style.
What I want people to know is to stop looking on social media and comparing your journey to the next person because the road to success looks different for everyone and there is no time stamp on that. Be yourself, stand out, and God will do the rest!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Omg! The first stop I would take them would be to the galleria or “The Gallo” located in Uptown Houston. I love a good retail therapy day and The Galleria is one of Texas biggest shopping malls and it’s definitely worth the hype (on a good day lol). It has over 375 stores (luxury stores included), an ice skating rink, and a ton of food options.
Because i’m a huge seafood fan, we would HAVE to stop by Lotus Seafood. I think everyone who visits Houston needs to experience lotus at least once. The location on Braeswood is the most iconic one but Pearland is not far behind in my opinion. If you go, you have to get the crack sauce lol. 10/10 recommend!!!
Houston has many great museums, interactive fun ones and educational that I think you can’t ever go wrong with.
If you are looking to go out and have some fun, Houston nightlife is unmatched. I personally prefer more lounge spots than club atmospheres so Parma lounge, Atomic Bottle, Seaside Lounge, Kamp Houston are just a few places I love that has good music, food, vibes, and drinks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, all of the credit, recognition, and glory goes to God. Without him giving me the talent and passion to do this, this wouldn’t even be my reality. Secondly, I have an amazing support system. My mom is literally my everything. Fun fact, when I told my mom I wanted to pursue makeup, she actually invested in me, started off my makeup kit, and IS STILL investing in my kit till this day lol. My family and friends literally support anything I do. They show up and show out for me every time I need them, especially when I used to ask them to let me practice on them or even they would ask me to do their makeup to give me some experience. Lastly, I’m nothing without my amazing, gorgeous clients that continue to support and challenge me in new ways. I have some very loyal clients that continuously come back to me and I will always make sure that they know their love and support does not go unnoticed.
