We had the good fortune of connecting with Devoun Rushing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devoun, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business has always been a personal goal. From a young age, I recognized that my vision and ambition were too expansive to be shaped by someone else. I understood that not everyone would see things the way I did, and I never wanted to be in a position where someone else had control over that vision. It was clear to me early on that working for myself was inevitable. My mindset from the beginning was simple: It has to work—I never gave myself the option to believe otherwise. Taking that leap of faith has been one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I haven’t looked back since.
What should our readers know about your business?
From day one, I’ve built my real estate business on a foundation of integrity and trust. My clients know they can count on me every step of the way. I’m not just focused on transactions—I’m committed to building long-lasting relationships and serving as a continued resource for my community and beyond. I’m proud to say that every family I’ve had the privilege to assist, whether buying or selling real estate, has been pleased with the experience.
Recently, I’ve made some significant changes to my business, and I can’t express how excited I am for the future. One important lesson I’ve learned along this journey is that consistency is the key to success. If you’re doing something right and you choose to show up every day and repeat those actions, eventually something great will happen. It may not be overnight, but as Dory said in Finding Nemo, “Just keep swimming!”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is such a vibrant and beautiful city with endless possibilities. As a certified foodie, I have the urge to explore a new restaurant every day! That’s why I balance it out with my focus on fitness and nutrition. If my best friend were visiting, our itinerary would look something like this:
Monday – We’d kick off the week strong with a morning run at Memorial Park’s scenic 3-mile loop. Afterward, I’d mix in some client prospecting and follow-up calls before heading to one of my favorite healthy spots, Local Foods in the Heights, for lunch.
Tuesday – We’d start the day at 6 a.m. with my personal trainer, Joshua, at Fit Factor Houston in Memorial City. Post-workout, we’d grab coffee at Wild, either in Montrose or the Heights. That evening, we’d dive into Taco Tuesday at one of Houston’s amazing taco spots or food trucks.
Wednesday – We’d spend the morning shopping at the famous Galleria, followed by a lunch of flavorful Pho at my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. Afterward, we’d take a stroll through the Museum District to catch some of the incredible exhibits. We’d close out the day at POST Houston, where we could grab dinner, enjoy a drink, and head up to the rooftop for a stunning view of the Houston skyline.
Thursday – We’d have dinner at one of my favorite spots in Sawyer Heights, KISS, famous for its incredible lamb chops and lemon drop martinis, available for a special price only on Thursdays!
Friday – We’d take a quick drive down to the Kemah Boardwalk and explore Galveston for a fun day by the water.
Saturday – We’d start the morning at The Heights Farmers Market, picking up fresh produce and local goods before heading out to explore downtown Houston. In the evening, we’d hit up some of my favorite downtown spots like Bungalow, Taste, and Off The Record for a lively night out.
Sunday – We’d start the day with a church service at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, then head to KISS for their brunch experience with live music, brunch platters, and mimosa carafes.
That’s just a taste of what Houston has to offer—there’s always something new to discover!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My support system is what keeps me grounded. Entrepreneurship is no easy feat, and building the respect and credibility needed to grow my business has required me to have tough conversations, even on days when I didn’t feel up to it. There are times when I’m exhausted, but then I’m reminded of my ‘why’—the people who depend on me and the legacy I’m building for future generations. When all is said and done, I wouldn’t be able to stay grounded without the unwavering support of my partner and my family, who remind me daily that I can conquer the world and that nothing can stand in the way of what God has planned for me.
