We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ LuNetta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ LuNetta, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success as a DJ is to always believe in yourself and don’t under estimate the power of networking. You can network in person by going to other dj events, music festivals, or local artist events in the city. I have learned to use my social media as a networking tool as well for djing. Using my social media to network has probably been the most effective in landing djing gigs. So many people will tell me they did a search djs using certain hashtags and they found me that way which I think is just incredible. I see my social media as a free marketing tool for my djing business.
I also use my gigs to network. There have been so many times when I’m djing a corporate gig or private event in which someone comes up to talk to me. I realized you can be talking to the next person that wants to book you. I take advantage of every conversation just by taking the time to have a conversation even if its quick because you never know what opportunity it will lead to.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing that sets me apart from other djs is that I am a mobile DJ. I have accepted gigs all over Texas and travelled as a mobile dj just to gain exposure. Even though I started djing in Houston I have done gigs in Austin, Kileen, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Atlanta. Being a mobile DJ you learn a lot along the way with each new city you dj in. It has taught me the importance of no matter where you go people have one thing in common- they love music. So no matter what city I’m djing in I always keep this mind. There is no greater feeling than playing a song someone loves and watching them run to the dance floor to dance.
I am most proud of the fact I never gave up on learning the technical side of djing. Djing forces you to come face to face with technology. You have to take the time to get to know your computer , your computers’s software, your music library, and your equipment. This was challenging for me in the beginning because as we all know technology is great but it can fail. I remember when my first laptop crashed and I didn’t have my music backed up. This was definitely one moment in my djing career where I felt discouraged and wanted to give up. Thankfully I had great djing mentors that shared with me how that happened to them too and how to properly back up your music going forward so that you can still have it in case your laptop were to crash again.
The biggest lessons I have learned as a dj is never compare yourrelf to other djs, Some DJs are celebrity djs and some are local djs. Both of these kind of DJs you can still make a positive impact. I do not compare myself to other djs. I know that the type of gigs I’m suppose to have I will have them as long as I keep putting in the work to become better each day. I am currently taking this online course with DJ Jazzy Jeff and one thing he told us is djing is a team sport. I agree with this 100%.
Another lesson I learned as a dj is make sure you take care of your equipment. Get insurance on it and back up your music on an external hard drive. Do the little things like organize your wires and buy bags covers to protect your speakers and tripods. Djing is a huge investment so protect your equipment when you can.
The last lesson I learned as a DJ is even when you djing and you mess up just keep going. When Im practicing at home recording myself even if I mess up I just keep going to the next song. Even the best djs still make mistakes and when you make a mistake it gives us the chance to learn from it. There has been plenty of times where I hit the wrong button on my controller or played the wrong song on accident. Its moments like this where you just learn from it and keep going.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize DJ Supa Star, as I attended her djing academy as one of her students. I attended classes with her and also lead by DJ Jnastic. DJ SupaStar Spin academy let know that it was possible to become a DJ no matter what age you are. The classes were supportive but more importantly fun as we learned the technical side of playing musics as a DJ.
I also would like to recognize DJ Nack for helping me start up my djing career by inviting me to be his opening dj for events he would have for our employer. DJ Nack took the time to show me how download music, prepare for events, and overall he taught me how present myself as a professional dj. For example he is the reason I have contracts when I conduct business with my clients to protect myself as a dj when booking my gigs.
In addition, I would like to recognize DJ Kayo and all the Flight Sqad DJs (DJ Wreck). DJ Kayo took the time to challenge me as a DJ by making me battle against him. I have to admit i was afraid the first time made me do this, but this exercise grew me as DJ. For that I want to thank him. DJ Kayo taught me how blend my music when djing, he helped me perfect my transitions. He attended my gigs and he would dj gigs with me as well. His classes allowed a safe place for me to discover who I was as a djing just by practicing freely for hours and hours with other djs . He provided constructive feedback to me in his classes that made me want to be better as a DJ. DJ Kayo taught be the whole purpose of being a dj is to have FUN when you are djing. It might sound crazy but this statement means everything. I learned as I started doing different kind of events like djing wedding certain things can happen that are stressful so its important to remember my job as a DJ is provide the musics and have fun while doing it.
Lastly, I want to recognize all the family members and friends that have supported me and even referred my djing services for an event. In the beginning a lot of bookings came straight from my co workers, friends, and family members. I am grateful for every gig that came from someone that knew me personally and wanted to support my business. I know that this is reason why I love djing all the house parties, graduations, family reunions, baby showers, etc because these gigs came from people that believed in me enough to let me be their dj.
