We had the good fortune of connecting with DLVRRY and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DLVRRY, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music has and will always be my main go to for a lot of things. There’s history with it. People come together with it. A song can change your life. I can articulate things I go through with music. It’s the one thing I know I’m good at doing and I have an incredible passion for it. The sense of fulfillment is unmatched. I pursue it because I feel like whether I’m just having fun or making something meaningful, it’s truly the best way for me to express myself. If someone else relates to my stories or just likes them, that’s just a plus and an honor.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m particularly excited about the new music I have coming out soon. I’ve been at this for 10 years now and I’ve finally hit that confidence in songwriting that I craved for so long. I changed my artist name, my sound, my brand, everything feels fresh to me now and I’m extremely proud of it. It most definitely hasn’t been easy though. I think most other artist that are coming up share the same sentiment, but dealing with doubt, dealing with other people, daydreaming about where you could be, it heavily effects the art and consistency. I just chalk it up to I wasn’t ready yet, or maybe I was just too worried about what other people think instead of what I think.
One day in particular, it just kind of hit me that I needed to have fun with this instead of looking at the finish line so much. I got so caught up in fantasy that reality kept hitting harder and harder. The old “it’s about the journey not the destination” saying. I made sure to start making the songs that I wanted to hear or that I wanted to listen to. If I don’t enjoy the music I make, then what’s the point? If I’m going to give something to other people, I have to make sure that the message comes across how I want it to. I have to make sure I say the words the way I want to. That’s why I chose DLVRRY (Delivery) as my artist name, because I will deliver.
In my music, I push the message of me just being a dude that was raised in the suburbs. Love/heartbreak, making right and wrong decisions, partying while trying to get my life together etc. All part of the human experience in my eyes. A lot of people go through those exact same things but I just know how to make that soundscape and make it feel good, never generic. In short, it’s a journey through my adulthood and I’m still living it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I feel like I’d be a terrible tour guide haha, I definitely don’t get out enough. I have my go to places though.
The POST is a pretty cool spot, it’s kind of a big cafe with multiple restaurants in it. There’s one spot in particular called “Thrive Juices,” they have the best Acai bowls I swear.
If you’re looking for a night life vibe, Washington Ave is usually the go to spot for a lot of people but so is downtown. I’m more of a low key guy so when I do go out, I prefer going to the speakeasy spots or pool halls. I actually went to this Pool Hall called “Woody’s Hideaway recently and it’s probably my new favorite spot.
Other than that, of course you got the museums, art galleries, food trucks etc.
I love the way the city looks at night though. Sometimes I’d just turn on a good album and just ride through the city with no destination.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well first off, I thank God for giving me the talent haha. Of course, my family and my friends have always supported me through my journey. Even when I had my lows or wanted to change things about the direction I saw myself going, they always had my back.
There’s this artistic collective called “The Indie Experience” I’d like to shoutout though. They throw concerts for local acts within the city of Houston. They’ve shown me what’s capable of happening when minds, hearts and talent connect with each other. Seeing and being a part of something like that has impacted me immensely.
