We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Cindy Amakwe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Cindy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting AGErite Pharmacy & Wellness Center was the fulfillment of a long-held dream my husband and I shared. After over 10 years in the pharmacy industry, I grew frustrated with its direction. The monopolization of the field by large pharmacies had tarnished the profession’s reputation, with poor customer service and a missed opportunity to fully utilize our clinical expertise in ambulatory care. Pharmacies were no longer seen as integral pillars of the community, and the chance to offer meaningful service was diminishing. Meanwhile, the world was shifting, with a growing focus on patient empowerment, choice, and wellness. People were becoming more proactive about managing their health, seeking more elective services that prioritized their well-being.

My vision was to create a space where patients not only felt welcomed and supported but were empowered to take charge of their health. At AGErite, we offer individualized care where each patient is heard and valued. The tranquil and elevated ambiance immediately puts patients at ease, fostering an environment where they can focus on their well-being. By combining a compounding pharmacy with wellness med spa and front store, we’ve created a holistic model rarely found in the U.S. Under one roof, patients can access a full range of wellness services. AGErite, pronounced “age right,” reflects our belief that age is just a number—everyone deserves to live their healthiest, most fulfilling life, and we’re here to help them achieve it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
AGErite Pharmacy & Wellness Center is a boutique, full-service compounding pharmacy and wellness med spa. The pharmacy offers compounding, retail, and over-the-counter medications, while the wellness med spa provides services such as IV hydration, Botox, fillers, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and hormone replacement therapy. We compound medications in-house for use at the wellness center and also supply medications to other patients and businesses.

The journey to AGErite took several years. The concept was first envisioned in 2017, but it wasn’t until 2020, amid uncertainty in the world, that my husband and I took the leap of faith to actively pursue it. We began construction in 2023, but due to contractor issues, our timeline was delayed by almost a year. Despite the setbacks, it required significant commitment, sacrifice, and motivation to keep moving forward. We were grateful to resume construction in 2024, culminating in our Grand Opening by the end of the year.

Though the delays were challenging at the time, we came to realize that everything happens for a reason. The setback allowed us to find a new contractor who completed the construction quickly and efficiently. It also gave us the opportunity to reassess and refine our business plan, ensuring that we were better positioned to serve our patients. Today, AGErite proudly serves the Houston community and beyond, with plans to expand and serve patients nationwide.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
We’d start with a luxurious spa day at the Post Oak Hotel to unwind and indulge. For brunch, we’d head to the River Oaks District, where we can enjoy a variety of upscale dining options in a chic, vibrant setting. In the evening, we’d have dinner at Guard and Grace Downtown, known for its incredible food and sophisticated ambiance. Afterwards, we’d head to CIEL for drinks, enjoying the lively atmosphere and great cocktails.
