We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Ryan-Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My goal was to create an inclusive event company. After launching 3 Of Cups, the Marriage Equality Act passed, which (finally) legitimized marriages between members of the LGBTQAI+ community in part of the United States Constitution. At 3 Of Cups, we were one of the first companies in the event & wedding industry of Texas to come out in support of the LGBTQAI+ community. We were already well practiced, working with clients in this respect and our team reflects varying identities. At the beginning of the movement, I had some disheartening conversations with other vendors and wedding publications that were not onboard, because they were concerned that they would lose their current clientele that would be in opposition. That is when I knew for sure that we had created 3 Of Cups with the right intention.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I march to the beat of my own drum. I am a natural leader and work best as my own boss. I could never function in a 9-5 job, going to the same office every day and doing the same monotonous thing day in and day out. I also didn’t fit in with the restaurant culture. I did shine when working in the Film & TV industry when I lived in NYC. However, the year I graduated college is when the recession hit, which eliminated jobs in the field. My first job out of school was working for the New York Film Academy, they sent me out to work at their Universal Studios campus, which is how I learned that I don’t like working with kids, it’s just not my thing. From there, I started going out to Burning Man to work during setup, which continued for a decade and lead me to meet kind folks from Austin, which is how I ended up moving to Texas and working in Venue Management. With a working background in Festivals, Theater & Film, and Venue Management, I developed a unique approach to Event & Wedding Planning. In 2014, I founded 3 Of Cups, which is a collective of event professionals based in Austin, TX. I am grateful to work with my friends. I own the @3OfCupsEvents department of the company, offering Planning + Coordination and Venue Location Scouting services. I also officiate ceremonies. And I consult for venues interested in expanding their private event rentals and wedding programs. I meet engaged couples that are sometimes stressed and overwhelmed. I try to make the tasks of wedding planning fun and manageable. I am committed to keeping our prices affordable, so folks that are on a budget and/or paying for their own wedding can still have a seasoned Planner to support them. I work one-on-one with clients, providing a collaborative and therapeutic relationship. My goal is to motivate clients to make informed decisions, strategize their budget, and enjoy the planning process. Their happiness makes me happy!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nothing excites me more than planning trips! My Husband loves vacationing with me, because I schedule out a detailed itinerary and he just has to show up and go along for the ride. I would like to start planning my clients’ Honeymoon vacations, which is included on my ever-growing to-do list. Austin is incredible, because you have the opportunity to experience a big city that is in harmony with nature. Lady Bird aka Town Lake runs through the edge of Downtown Austin. You can enjoy water activities, walk the perimeter of the Lake, and take boat tours to see the bats under the bridge. Chilling at Zilker Park and swimming at Barton Springs are the most iconic Austin things to do. And if you drive just outside of the city, there are breathtaking beautiful water holes, such as the Blue Hole. I love to recommend places to eat and drink. TORCHY’s Tacos is a must-do. The options for BBQ Are limitless, I suggest LAMBERTS in Downtown Austin. From there, you can skip around cocktail bars. I used to do the music booking for Firehouse Lounge, which is a speakeasy located behind the bookshelf of their Hostel Desk and the famous Driskill Hotel is across the street. I’m more of a fan of East 6th street than “Dirty 6th” which is more alike to New Orleans’ Bourbon Street and I attend a quarterly storytelling show, Bedpost Confessions. I also attend a monthly storytelling show called TESTIFY, which has a residency at Spider House Ballroom. My Husband is the Event Booker for Spider House, which was my old job and how we met. In fact, Coley Jackson (Owner of 3 Of Cups Design + Florals) is the one that introduced us, because she was the General Manager at Spider House back in the day. What’s funny is that she now has twins with Jay who took over her old job when she left Spider House to start 3 Of Cups with me. It’s quite the Spider Web! In 2019, I launched a Wedding Program at NATIVE Hostels, which I believe is the coolest place in Austin; It’s a Cafe & Bar with a Food Truck, Hostel, and Event Space. From there, you can walk around the eastside, which is where there are limitless options, such as CENOTE, Kemuri, Takoba, and local music & entertainment venues, such as The White Horse, Hotel Vegas, and The North Door among many others. I live in South Austin, which I like because of all of the greenery. I live next door to my favorite bar, Indian Roller. And my Husband and I go cycling at the Veloway to start the morning off right. I could go on and on and on…..

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
3 Of Cups has thrived in the Austin and surrounding areas, because of the support of like-minded vendors and Venue Managers. Our approach is to become experts at a venue to best assist our clients throughout the planning process and day of the event. We have proven ourselves to earn a spot on the Preferred Vendors List at several venues. We have also built working relationships with vendors that we collaborate well with and share the same vibe that often attracts the same clientele. And as a member of the Associated Wedding Planners of Austin (AWPA), we are connected with other local companies that are committed to building community.
