We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Marya Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Marya, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over the years, my approach to work-life balance has evolved significantly. Initially, I found myself struggling to juggle the demands of my professional career, academic pursuits, and personal life. Like many individuals, I often felt overwhelmed and stretched thin, trying to excel in all areas simultaneously.

However, as time went on, I came to realize the importance of prioritization and boundaries in achieving a healthy work-life balance. I learned to identify my core values and set clear boundaries to protect my time and energy. By prioritizing tasks based on their importance and aligning them with my personal and professional goals, I found greater clarity and focus in my daily life.

Today, I view work-life balance as a dynamic and ongoing process rather than a static goal to be achieved. It’s about continuously assessing and adjusting my priorities to ensure that I’m investing time and energy into the areas of my life that matter most to me. It’s also about being mindful of my own well-being and recognizing when I need to take a step back and recharge.

Ultimately, I believe that work-life balance is about finding harmony and fulfillment in all aspects of life, whether it’s pursuing professional success, nurturing personal relationships, or prioritizing self-care. It’s about embracing flexibility, setting realistic expectations, and being kind to ourselves along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hey there! If my best friend was visiting Oakland for a week, I’d make sure they had the time of their life! Here’s what our itinerary might look like:

Day 1: We’d kick things off with brunch at Brown Sugar Kitchen for some mouthwatering chicken and waffles. Then, we’d head to Lake Merritt for a leisurely stroll and maybe rent a pedal boat if we’re feeling adventurous. In the evening, we’d grab dinner at Homeroom for some delicious mac and cheese and then catch a live jazz show at Yoshi’s.

Day 2: It’s time to explore the vibrant art scene in Oakland. We’d start with a visit to the Oakland Museum of California to check out their amazing exhibits. Then, we’d wander around the downtown area, checking out the colorful street art and maybe popping into some local galleries. For lunch, we’d grab some tacos at Tacos Sinaloa food truck before heading to Jack London Square for drinks by the waterfront.

Day 3: Today, we’re going to indulge in some serious foodie adventures. We’d start with brunch at Grand Lake Kitchen for their famous avocado toast. Then, we’d spend the afternoon exploring the Temescal neighborhood, hopping from one artisanal bakery to the next. For dinner, it’s gotta be B-Side BBQ for some finger-lickin’ good ribs and brisket.

Day 4: Let’s take a break from the city and head up to wine country! We’d spend the day wine tasting in Napa Valley, soaking in the beautiful vineyard views and sipping on some world-class wines. After a day of indulgence, we’d head back to Oakland and treat ourselves to a fancy dinner at Michelin-starred restaurant Commis.

Day 5: Time to get outdoorsy! We’d start the day with a hike in Redwood Regional Park, taking in the majestic beauty of the ancient redwoods. Then, we’d head to Temescal Brewing for some craft beers and live music in their beer garden. In the evening, we’d check out a concert at the Fox Theater.

Day 6: Let’s spend today exploring the diverse cultural scene in Oakland. We’d start with breakfast at Lois the Pie Queen for some classic soul food. Then, we’d visit the African American Museum and Library to learn about the rich history of Black culture in Oakland. For dinner, it’s gotta be Sweet Fingers Jamaican for some authentic Caribbean cuisine.

Day 7: It’s our last day together, so let’s make it count! We’d start with brunch at Brown Sugar Kitchen one last time (because you can never have too much chicken and waffles). Then, we’d spend the day shopping for unique souvenirs at the Oakland’s Own store and browsing the vintage shops in Old Oakland. In the evening, we’d head to the New Parish for some live music and dancing to cap off an amazing week in Oakland.

Overall, Oakland is just bursting with fun, interesting, and exciting things to see and do, and I can’t wait to share it all with my best friend!
