We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Sharon H. Porter and Karen McConnell-Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sharon and Karen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Owners and Founders, Karen McConnell-Jones and Dr. Sharon H. Porter (Dr. Sharon) are owners of their own businesses, Class Act Productions, LLC (Karen) and Perfect Time SHP LLC (Dr. Sharon).

The thought process behind owning a business together (Vision & Purpose LLC) was to be “all things media” to our community. Our passion and love for the community, politics, and media brought us together.

We launched Vision & Purpose (V&P) LifeStyle Magazine in March 2020 and Vision & Purpose Media in July 2021.

V&P Magazine is a bi-monthly print and digital magazine that boasts 12 columns: Inspirational Moments, Education Is Key, Business & Entrepreneurship, Health & Wellness, Political Awareness, Community Outreach, Authors Speak, All Things Fashion, Performing Arts, Sports Report, Travel & Real Estate, and 2NC.

V&P Media is a full media and broadcasting studio which provides, live-streaming video and podcasts, remote location live-streams, and photography.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Vision & Purpose LifeStyle Magazine and Media apart from others is our love and passion for serving our community, because “community is everywhere.”

We are most proud of moving into our own media headquarters.

It has taken hard work, dedication, and determination to get to where we are. We launched the magazine at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic and we persevered through.

Lessons learned along the way include, never give up, connect with the right partner, put your trust in that partner, know your value, know your worth, and as one of our great mentors said, you can’t be all things to all people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best part of being in the (DMV) Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, we have so many historic landmarks and phenomenal areas to visit.

We would start out with a visit to the Martin L.. King Memorial in Washington, DC and other memorials, we would then journey to Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, take the Ferry to Georgetown and the beautiful National Harbor. To add a little culture we would visit our favorite Art Gallery, Overdue Recognition in Bowie, Maryland.

We would end the day in the new Downtown Prince George’s, where V&P Media headquarters is located for a private catered dinner by TJ’s Catering with Chef Jason Greene.

Of course we would have to give a LIVE review of our day in the V&P Studio.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to dedicate our shoutout to Devay Campbell. Devay was known as the “Career Hustler” and could always be found giving her “2 Cents’.

Through an invitation to an annual Vision Conference, Dr. Sharon H. Porter and Karen McConnell-Jones met, networked, and connected.

Devay passed on March 13, 2020, but she continues to live on in our hearts and in our memories.
