We had the good fortune of connecting with Edgar Sermeno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edgar , is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
It makes a person be brave, have courage, learn how to be disciplined, gets to make healthier choices, confidence and brings up their self esteem. Since the doors have open which is 5 years ago. A lot of people have came and left. and (some are still with us.) But when they leave they are different person. The gym has opened them up completely. Not be scared as well not to be shy to ask for help. Everyone is in there to give it there 100 and to be the best version of themselves. What helps and makes it easier. Is that everyone in the gym will gladly help you, give you advice or even take you under their wing. That experience of just people helping one another is just beautiful. If they decided leave or some decide to stay they will pass on what the true meaning of what a helping hand means.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Where to even start this. I have worked in a variety of jobs. Cleaning car rental properties, cleaning banks and dental offices, working at grocery story, Walgreens, Construction, Hydroblaster, Paint mixer at Sherwin Williams, Valet, Cleaning Sailboats, Washington Cars, Working at Shell Deer Park in their warehouse, to Managing equipment at Seatex. From working at all of theses places all of them had one thing in common. That was talking to people. I was really good at talking to people and making them feel comfortable as well it felt so natural to me. This how I got better and fell in love more with what I do now. I was getting experience in both fields job wise as well in talking to people. That’s what I am so proud of. I truly love talking to people and helping them in which ever way possible. This is what sets me apart. I take the time to listen to each person and listen to their life stories and if they ask for help I will gladly help if I can. It has been very tough. Some people envy it that you can get along with people so well or your personality and way of being can be used against you. What I learn and I know for fact is that you will not make everyone happy in this world and that not everyone will like you. That’s fine by me because I will still keep being me either you like me or not. My brand when I train I train hard no sympathy not one bit at all. You hire me for one reason and it’s to make you better and that’s what I do. I only ask for one thing. That is – To remember me for who I was to you not for what I have done.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Food places there are so many good ones. But the one that I go to and I would take them for sure is La Esquina Food truck @la_esquina_truck. Their food is so good and their customer service is what drawn me to them and as well to other people in Houston. Their service is like no other the only thing that will sum it up is I Truly Love It. So I am beer drinker. In Houston there plenty of brews that make their own beer. All of them are so good but each one has their unique touch. Just to name a few where you catch me at is St. Arnold, 8th Wonder, Buff Brew, Bakfisk, Heights Beer Garden. This is where most definitely I would take my friend. I more of a chill person. A place where we can chill enjoy the conversation while drinking a cold one. I am not into clubs as much.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is plenty. Three people that I gave to really give thanks that helped me when I was lost and when I needed that help. As I got into fitness I didn’t know anything not one bit. That’s until I met Lee and Carlos at the gym. I would train for hours seriously like 3 hours. It would be to point I would ask my wife to bring me food so I can eat so I can keep on going. Carlos and Lee took me under their wing. They literally showed everything they could teach. Lee was into powerlifting and bodybuilding and Carlos was just bodybuilding. With their knowledge and experience that I was receiving I had to find away on how it would work for me. Not all workouts are for everyone so you have to find and try different body positions and hand placements. After that I would just to find my touch and my style. It was easy because I loved both so I just had to play with numbers and add my touch. After all that it landed into place. The third person is my Dolores Amaya my Wife. One thing I know that if you are venturing onto becoming a Entrepreneur the support of your significant other is most important. She has been there since day one, days that I truly just need a hug or get some advice. Without the support of my wife this could not happened. As well she helped to love forward into training people when the opportunity came to me. To all three Dolores, Carlos and Lee thank you so much!
