We had the good fortune of connecting with Eugene Fisher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eugene, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Growing up in New Orleans, LA has made a tremendous impact on where and who I am today. New Orleans was known for being the number 1 murder capitol in the world during my upbringing. At the age of 10, I lost my dad and almost lost my mom to gun violence and drugs. This became a major impact in my life and I used it as a stepping stone to a better future . So, I studied hard and work even harder, as I took on the role of the man of the house , to help provide for other siblings. I knew I didn’t want to become a victim of society, so the one thing I knew I was good at, in which was cooking and being creative in the kitchen. I took that skill set and enrolled in community college and studied and mastered the culinary art program. I knew nothing will come easy being a young black man in New Orleans, so I then moved to Houston, TX , where doors began to open and opportunities begun to grow. Working as a cake decorator, then into bakery management, taught and gave me a mindset on becoming an entrepreneur. I then enrolled back into college to study business management , then the birth of Cakes by Eugene came into play.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business Cakes by Eugene, was a hobby for quick extra cash. I’ve always worked a full time job and never really put any thought into making Cakes by Eugene a business. I was content with it being a hobby and way to help earn more money. Not unit i then realize, this hobby can be much bigger then what it is. My regular job was already a cake decorator for local grocery stores, I then started to get more involved in learning the basic business of running a bakery by shadowing management and enrolling in leadership develop classes so I can move up in the company. While attending school for business management, I became a bakery manager and was in that role for at least 15 years. During this time, I was still at home catering and making cake for events, the customer base grew bigger and bigger by the seasons. My biggest challenge was overcoming the fear of failing, because who wants to fail. I remember losing my job and I didn’t think nothing of it because I had a good hobby to fall back on. Man, was i wrong. I had an eye opening experience, that the bills wasn’t going to stop, when event orders had died down and I didn’t know where the next check was going to come from. This made me a humble man and I went back to work as a bakery manager. I want the world to know no matter how many times you fall get back up and try 10 times harder. No one has ever won without failing first. I also want the world to know the ingredients to my brand consist of determination, motivation, family, and passion and love. Mixed together these ingredients creates a lifetime of memories for others and their families.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend was to visit , we will definitely paint the city black. Being from New Orleans, we love to eat, drink and party. So we will be doing all three from sun up to sun down.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank all my family, friends , and customer base for truly supporting my dream as it was just a vision that turned into reality. A special shout out to Halisha Washington, Joanna Cruz, and Tawanna Fisher, these 3 females has always inspired, motivated, and mentored me to become a better me and encouraged me to never throw in the towel. Lastly, glory to god for blessing me with true raw talent, and utilizing my talent to be a part of so many memories for others.
