We had the good fortune of connecting with Genesis Loera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Genesis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think having your own business is something admirable. The idea of possessing a valuable product or service that provides a solution to a problem and solves a need, and then turning around and offering it to the world is something exciting! What a special way to live life! By helping make other’s life better in some unique way. Whether that’s bringing a moment of peace and joy to a family after a hot day through a scoop of your homemade chocolate vanilla ice cream, or helping families keep cool on that same sunny day with a top of the line AC system you developed, what it boils down to is this .. business is about making the world a better place. Period. After working in banking for a few years, I knew this was the route I had to take. And the idea of using my knowledge and understanding of finances to help other make better more informed decisions about theirs, was born.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my financial planning business while in college and the most worried people were my parents. How could I go from a “safe, secure” banking position to a zero salary position building something from complete scratch? It wasn’t logical. And, for a while, it was my biggest concert too!! But, I also knew that I had something to give that was greater than any of that. And in my mind, if I was to fail, why not do it when I still live at home and have minimal obligations, right?! It was definitely a difficult journey, and continues to be from time to time- particularly when I battle the question of how do I make myself better for others? This is a never ending conversation and sometimes the answers are very clear and straightforward, and sometimes they are not. The way I overcome this is going back to WHY I got into this, and reflecting on all the positive things that have happened in my life because of this decision to start a business. I want the world to know that, like my “wish” list project in high school, life rewards you with what you put out into the world, and what you ask of it. That is the true foundation of my business. I promised that I would give the best of me each and every time, because that is what others truly deserve.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off, H-town is the best city in the world. Hands down first stop on the list has to be, Whataburger. Like no question. From there, if weather is cooperative, we’d try and catch some outdoor entertainment at popular spots like Discovery Green or Hermann Park’s Miller theater. Next, we would plan out our dinner which would be either BBQ – Pinkerton’s is my go to- or Mexican- which has to be Xochi downtown. After nightfall, we would spend our night lounged out in the back of an SUV and watch two back to back movies at the Showboat drive-in. Where else are you going to find a DRIVE-IN!!
Next day, we prepare for a morning sweat session at Be Strong Fitness with Walter Tamacas, followed by a well deserved brunch at Tiny Boxwoods in River Oaks. Then, we hit up our one-of-a-kind museum district. Butterflies? Art? Science? Rocks? YES, PLEASE!!! We’d finish off with a refreshing thirst quencher at Irma’s original. Her lemonade is a magical addicting potion of happiness. Finally, if it’s a weekend, we would find where local live music is playing for some salsa dancing!
Other must-do’s include Oishii Sushi in Greenway Plaza, Vietnamese Pho at Old Saigon Cafe on Westheimer, and mouth watering mexican sandwiches at Tortas Perronas in Spring Branch.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my 12th grade English teacher that taught me about Carpe Diem, and made me create my first ever list of “Wishes”. Although I didn’t recognize it at the time, this simple act of writing out my goals and dreams was the spark that ignited a sort of magical chain reaction in my life. Who would have EVER thought that life would grant you those exact wishes!! I know this has had a profound way in how my life has turned out, and I am so grateful the world is filled with people like this that trigger these miracles!
