We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Mulik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The most important decision I have made is to keep going. There have been many times where I could have given up, some as early as college when my photography business journey really began. I made my way through different types of photography and jobs within this industry, and I’ve picked up and restarted my business in different cities and states before settling in Houston a few years ago. By continuing on with my goals and evolving as I go, I now have an amazing “job” working for myself as a commercial photographer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am so excited about where my journey has led me to today. I have always loved art and have dabbled in many different kinds, but I really committed to photography when I decided to pursue it in college and get my BFA. I took on a variety of work, from taking portraits in a major retailer, to photographing babies in a hospital, to photographing clothing for an e-commerce company. I would pick up any freelance work I could on the side and I eventually made my way into running my business full-time. I have learned a lot along the way not only by studying the artistic and technical side of photography, but also how to apply those skills in a meaningful and purposeful way by working with a diverse group of people and businesses. My work now primarily consists of product and fashion photography, and I spend most of my time working with business owners and entrepreneurs by creating the photos they need for their brands. I love what I do, and I love working with other passionate, like-minded people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is the best, there are so many great things to see and do. Long before I knew I’d be living in Houston, I planned to make a trip here to visit the Rothko Chapel. It was one of the first places I went to after moving here and is always on my list to take visitors to. I would definitely add in another museum as well, like the Museum of Fine Arts. I also love going to Hermann Park to visit the Japanese Garden or McGovern Centennial Gardens. Of course, the entire trip would have to revolve around food. From sushi to bbq to dumplings, Houston has it all and I’m always finding new places to take a friend to.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many, but my husband and family definitely come to mind first. My husband gives me constant support daily and I wouldn’t be where I am now without him. Years ago, early on in our relationship, we made a plan for our life and career goals and have worked together in achieving those ever since. My parents have always encouraged me and have been my biggest supporters since day one. They never questioned my goals to have my own photography business and they have always pushed me to be my best. My brother has also always been there to give me honest advice and to cheer me on. Last but certainly not least, I have so many amazing clients that come to mind, many of whom have become friends, collaborators, and are another big source of support for me.
