We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugh Smikle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hugh, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The driving factor behind entrepreneurship for me is freedom. I enjoy having the freedom and flexibility to set my own schedule.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Some people refer to personal strengths as superpowers. If we subscribe to that thinking, my super powers are organization and determination. In my previous roles as an employee working for a large company, organization and determination helped me succeed and those superpowers are critical to running a business focused on providing quality work and excellent customer service.
Our company, H&M Renovations, provides full home renovations, specializing in kitchens and baths. Our business focuses on building relationships with the people who hire us. Remodeling and renovating your space is more than just a transaction for us. We have developed friendships with our clients. We appreciate knowing more about their family life and how they use the space. We love seeing our customer’s face when we make their ideas a reality.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is known for it’s barbecue and Mexican food so we would definitely be eating alot! We love Killen’s for beef ribs. Our favorite breakfast tacos, hands down, the best in the city can be found at Taqueria Laredo. For dessert we love Mochinut on Bellaire. They serve a wonderful treat that is a cross between a American donut and Japanese mochi.
For things to do and places to see we would do a little tour of the Houston Zoo, the Galleria – a mall, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Discovery Green, and Top Golf.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I started the business, the business would not be the success it is without support from family. Our family has provided the assistance, knowledge, and support to keep things running. They have done everything from consulting on design ideas to being in the field, on site doing the work.
