Meet Jaela Amos | Travel Hairstylist and Visionary

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaela Amos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaela, what do you want your legacy to be?
I hope that the legacy I leave is a proud one. I want people to remember me as passionate, and goal-driven. I want people to be inspired by my story. Something that my family and community would call exceptional. I want to be remembered for the lives I’ve changed, and how great I made people feel about themselves. I want people to remember me as the woman who always knew she could, so she did!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I see hair as an art that is not solely physical but deep within. Hair is a way of expression, it’s your crown. Hair is a part of your overall look. An extension of yourself that shows how you feel inside. I am a firm believer in ‘If you look good, you feel good’ and I make sure I pour that energy into my clients every time they’re in my chair. I always knew I was a go-getter and leader, and I definitely do not belong in one box. To get here professionally, I had to do a lot of soul-searching and truly embrace my strengths. I had to say no to many opportunities, and it took me ignoring a lot of outside noise for me to realize my faults. My biggest challenge was maturing and understanding my power as an adult. For many years I cared too much about what people thought of me. I never wanted to be seen in a negative light and hated the thought of anyone saying anything terrible about me. Throughout that time I went through a series of traumatic events: I got shot and recovered, almost evicted, my car was taken away, I forced myself into loneliness, and moved back home with my family. Which was all a byproduct of attempting to please others and not being honest with myself. To overcome this I got into therapy, opened up more, and started learning the true value of vulnerability. I became more open with my friends and family around me. This grew my support system tremendously, and I realized I didn’t have to pretend to be something/someone I’m not for people to like/love me. That alone put so much power and confidence in me and I am now happier and the best version of me I have ever seen.
I am most excited to complete an upcoming black history project I’m working on. I have a talented team of up-and-coming creatives from the local area. I will have the opportunity to style the wardrobe and hair for it. This project is giving me and my team the ability to put our creative minds together to make something beautiful for our community.
I want the world to know that I am unstoppable and I will be one the best they’ve ever seen. I want my work to show the world that I am detail-oriented, driven, and passionate. I know I am not close to where I want to be but I know I get closer to my goal day by day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, honey, I have a whole list in my notes dedicated to this! Okay so, first things first, food! For breakfast, we’re going to Coco’s Crepes or Taste Bar. I love a good hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop shop, so lunch will be Tropical Express, Hippo Burger, or Swamp City. Dinner options are endless! Monument Inn is always a go-to, you can eat good and affordable food, sit by the water, and have a good view all in one. To hang out or grab a drink we would go to Understory, Cidercade or Rabbits Got the gun. Now if the girls are outside, Cru, Kamp, Space (anything with one syllable, (lol jk)). For a nontraditional place to hang out, I love any type of skating, whether it be ice skating or roller skating. So, we would go to Dairy Ashford Skating Rink or The Galleria for Ice skating.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, my cosmetology classmates at Houston Aveda Institute, my clients, my educators, everyone on my visionary team, my church family, and most importantly God. My list could go on and on but, these are the people that stand out the most to me at this time.
