We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Bolden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My process all started as a young girl really into fashion design and everything related to beauty. I knew at 11 that I wanted to be my own boss and change the world in the fashion\beauty industry. As well as seeing my mother as a model and doing her makeup and doing her hair made the desire stronger. It was a difficult process seeing that I got diagnosed with Systemic lupus erythematosus at the age of 18. My process was really believing in myself even when I’m having a flare-up that I still believe! Pushing forward with the plan I had which was to do makeup even if I wasn’t able to do it on someone else due to joint pain practicing on myself was just as joyous.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist, a makeup artist, or a model what sets me apart is simply me! My personality, in no circumstance, do I shun myself for being my authentic self. That has helped me grow as a person and for my business, people can feel a genuine person when they’re around one. I take pride in being authentic and quirky self. I got here because of the support of my own self, and my mother. Having lupus made it harder for me to push forward and really get things going but the thing is I never stopped pushing myself. I had to foresee that trials and tribulation were going to come and not to be surprised or worried about them but again, to push forward. I’ve learned that criticism is good. Take in all advice you can whether it’s coming from a negative connotation or positive, and triumph from it. I would love for people to know that people are going to not support you and that may come from your own family but to only go from there and run up that steep hill. Everyone has patience. Successful people learn to use it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Although I do go out much I love Cafe express it’s such a quaint and delicious place to stop by. My favorite plate would have to be the salmon Mediterranian with mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. But now that I am vegan I recently found this great restaurant called Kornyvibes, its a great spot even if you’re not a vegan or vegetarian plus they gave a cute picture-taking spot for memories. Everyone loves to paint even if you’re not that good at so I most definitely would suggest Pinot Palette it’s so fun and really takes your mind of the mundane things about life. To get some good fresh air and to just enjoy the scenery while having a picnic would be the Sugarland town center. They have these adorable chairs where you can just sit and sip on a smoothie or coffee from nearby shops and relax.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person who was there by my side at every turn is my mother. A paragon of a woman, a pioneer in the family, my inspiration, and just an all-around obliging and suave woman. She supports me to only the fullest extent possible as I do the same my mother is a gift that I am grateful for. My mother pushes me to be great and calls me out on my incivilities or contrivance I need to ameliorate. My mother is peace, love, and happiness, my greatest support.
