Meet Jakayla Turner | Licensed Cosmetologist / Lash Technician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jakayla Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jakayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was very nerve-racking lol. I am a Licensed Cosmetologist, and I moved to Houston, Texas about a year ago and I did not know much of anyone here. In the process of moving here I kept telling myself I was going to start my own business as a Lash Technician. I let months and months go by because I would let fear get in the way, and I would keep trying to wait on what I thought would be the perfect time. Eventually, I decided to stop making excuses to why I couldn’t start yet, and I took a leap of faith and started posting to gain some clientele. I have a passion for the beauty industry, so starting this business was very important to me and I knew the only way it was going to happen is if I believed in myself.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of OniaKay Lashed IT. In my business I help enhance the beauty of individuals through applying lash extensions. What sets me apart from others is my passion for what I do. I love to be a part of enhancing the beauty of women and creating a welcoming environment for all of my clients, along with great customer service. I am a firm believer of when you look good, you feel good. I love the smiles and satisfaction I get when someone loves how their lash service came out. I am so excited to see how much OniaKay Lashed It will grow, and to be able to build positive relationships and provide a great experience for a lot of the beautiful women here in the Houston area. I will say, it wasn’t easy starting my business, my main issue was overcoming my mind and being confident in what I can do. What helped me overcome this challenge was God, and the encouragement and words of affirmation from my loved ones. I want you all to know you can do anything you put your mind to. Don’t give up when things get challenging or you become discouraged, keep going and don’t compare yourself to others. What is for you will always be for you and nobody can take that from you.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to send a huge shout out to first, my boyfriend who has been my biggest supporter. You have taken the time to invest in me and encourage me to keep going throughout this journey and still continue to do so, I appreciate you so much for that. I would also like to thank my family, friends, and loved ones who have been so supportive of my business from the ones who have purchased services and products from me, to the ones who have constantly encouraged me and gave wonderful words of wisdom. You guys are all appreciated more than you know! I’m so grateful to have individuals like you in my life.
