We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal Gaylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamal, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk plays a big part in everyday life. I think everyone takes risks and that’s inevitable. The greater the risk, the bigger return, The ability to manage risk will helps people act more confidently on decisions. I can say that risk in my life and career has helped me exponentially. Without it, I don’t think I would be where I am today. I’ve personally took a lot of risks myself that people would look at and think its crazy. When I quit my job to pursue my business full time while being a father, people thought that was a big risk too. Once you take risks regularly, then it becomes easier to manage.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am making it an effort to really show that my brand stands out from others because we are really working to inspire though our art in clothing that will impact everyone of our customers while striving for excellence and customer satisfaction. I am most proud of the people who support, and those along the way who will continue to support. Without them, none of this would be possible. Creating dope clothing for people who want to push themselves and others should be recognized and supported as well. That’s what I strive to do with this brand. I want to build a team that will grow and inspire everyone around them in anyway possible.
I fell like where I’m at today is still not the pinnacle of where I could be. I am working on myself everyday, brick by brick. I came into this industry prepared for this not to be easy. I knew the obstacles that I needed to face. I find them and face them head on to learn and grow from each one.
Some major lessons were learned along the way. I would say the top 2 that I have learned would have to be that 1, relationships matter. The relationships you keep are the show of how you will continue in your journey to success. Number 2 would be Collaboration over competition. Trying to compete with everyone just keeps you in a loop of losing and winning. You will face those challenges regardless , so I wouldn’t add more to your plate. There’s a lot more that I’ve learned along the way that I could go on and on about. These 2 are at the top.
I would like the world to know that Reckless Ambition is a brand that is a community of people who push themselves and other to success without yield. That’s how we have earned our slogan, Risk All, Gain Everything. The people who aline with this is ready to risk what needs to be done to achieve their vision despite all that could be against them. A community that doesn’t see obstacles , but has a tunnel vision of what they are trying to achieve. We strive to be a global leader in designing and producing unique and exclusive streetwear clothing lines that never compromise quality and are continuously innovative within the world of streetwear design.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is tricky because I’ve only been in Houston for a year now but there are definitely some places that I visit on the regular. So I would say for brunch, that’s my favorite meal of the day, I would take them to New Spot Eatery. That’s the first place that I went to when I moved here and they have outstanding food. Then I would take them to my favorite park, Buffalo Bayou. They really have to see that amazing view of the Houston city. I would have to make sure they check out the food trucks around the city. The amazing part about them is there is a little of everything.
I would say that in my view point as of now, the most fun thing I have done is zooming around the city on the electric scooters downtown. We’ve meet some cool people while doing that. Also Levy park is a great place that my daughter loves because it has a little water park and lots of it is kid friendly.
Now my most exciting place to check out is down Bellaire. There are so many authentic Asian foods. I love how the street name are in a different language because it really makes you feel was if you have driven to a different part of the world.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to first give my support to my family and friends. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t continue to build my business or myself. Another shoutout I would like to give is to the mentors that allowed me to follow the blueprint that they have followed. Andy Frisella ( 1st Phorm CEO ) , Geedup ( Clothing brand), Randall Pics ( Live Fit CEO ), Christian Guzman ( Alphalete CEO ) , Shawley Coker ( Inaka Power- Owner and Founder) and that’s just a few that really have inspired me to do what I do.
This next person deserves more than just a little credit. My wife, Logan, is my back bone. everyday she pushed me past my potential. Honestly if it wasn’t for her , I would have given up along time ago.
