We had the good fortune of connecting with Jana Frost and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own artistic journey and turning it into business was a natural progression for me, stemming from a deep desire to share my unique perspective on the world through mixed-media art. I believe that art is a powerful medium for expression and exploration, and I wanted to create a platform where I could freely blend symbolism, surrealism, and social commentary to invite viewers into the hidden depths of reality. By establishing my own artistic venture, I aimed to create a space where I could freely explore these themes without constraints of a company, or “a boss”.

Beginning my career as a marketing designer was a first step into the creative realm. Working in this field provided a foundation in visual communication and design, allowing me to hone my skills in delivering impactful messages through visuals. However, over time, I felt a pull towards a more artistic expression.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a fusion of symbolism, surrealism, and social commentary, reflecting my perspective on the world in front of us and unconscious. I am a mixed media artist, which means you can see any sorts of projects on my page, from digital collages to sculptures, videos and liquid light projections.

What sets me apart is the exploration of complexities, our perception of the world through different lenses, anthropological interest of human interaction with other people and within ourselves. As a 3rd culture kid myself, who was brought up in post-Soviet country, and spent almost a decade in the south of Europe and now settling in the city of London, living between cultures shaped me as a human and artist. That is why I am inviting viewers to contemplate hidden depths and the intricate web of relationships that bind us.

I take pride in the paradoxical beauty emerging from the intersection of chaos and order, encouraging the viewers of my artworks to explore the intricate layers of reality. Professionally, my journey started as a marketing designer, providing a foundation in visual communication. Transitioning into a more artistic field was a gradual process inspired by my heritage and a desire for deeper expression.

The path was not without challenges, but overcoming them required resilience and a commitment to artistic exploration. I am still having a full time job while achieving my personal goals after corporate life. Lessons learned include the importance of authenticity, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than set backs, and the power of a supportive network.

I want the world to know that my art is a space on earth, where anyone can explore the shared emotions and experiences that connect us. It’s a journey into the ups and downs, celebrating the beauty in our collective stories. My art practice is about exploring different cultures, evolving artistically, and always striving for authentic expression

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Huston: Certainly, the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston is a must-visit for me. Galleries, in general, offer a unique atmosphere that allows visitors to comfortably think, explore, and immerse themselves in a new world. This museum with its innovative exhibits, provides a particularly enriching experience that stimulates both thought and creativity.

As an artist in London, my favorite local spots are:
Vintage markets like those in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Covent Garden and Notting Hill are treasure troves, sparking the creativity with their eclectic finds and nostalgic charm. These markets weave stories of the past into the present, influencing my art with a mix of history and modernity.

Coffee shops, especially in London, serve as intimate spaces where I can immerse myself in people’s stories. The hum of conversations becomes a soundtrack, adding depth to my creative process.

One of my cherished walks is along the canal from Angel to Broadway Market. It has a stunning panorama of local life, nature, and the vibrant art scene. The local galleries along the way gives the dynamic atmosphere, creating a seamless blend of community, creativity, and the beauty of London’s urban and natural landscapes. This walk has become a sunny Sunday ritual for me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, particularly my mom, who has been my number one fan and unwavering support. Her acceptance of my decision to move abroad and pursue my artistic journey helped me a lot.

I want to also express gratitude to my dearest friends. Their steadfast support and presence on every step of my journey, no matter how small or big, have been invaluable. Their encouragement has played a crucial role in shaping my artistic path.

Lastly, a special shoutout goes to Hilma af Klint, the Swedish artist and mystic, whose pioneering abstract works have been a significant inspiration in my artistic exploration. As well as Peeter Allik, Estonian artist and Surrealist who’s work influenced my view on art and symbolism.
