Meet Jasmine Medel | Mini barbershop owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Medel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been an out-of-the-box thinker and never really fit into a cookie-cutter environment. Creativity is how I express myself and connect with the world. Barbering gave me a way to turn that expression into something tangible — not just creating a look, but creating a feeling. It’s a win-win: I get to do what I love every day, and my clients walk away feeling more confident and better about themselves. That exchange is what makes it meaningful to me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got to where I am by constantly working on myself — always staying a student of the craft and truly listening to my clients and their needs. My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every challenge that presented itself. I’ve learned this isn’t an “in-and-out” business and not to rush the process. You build real relationships. Clients trust you, open up to you, and allow you into personal parts of their lives — and that’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. I’ve faced struggles that could have held me back, but I’ve learned to show up every day with a smile and give my best, no matter what I’m going through. My clients deserve nothing less, and their trust and support remind me why I do what I do. Every challenge I’ve overcome has made me more resilient, more dedicated, and more committed to leaving a positive mark on everyone I serve, while continuing to grow and make a name for myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to Houston for a week, I’d give her the full experience. We’d start with the food — maybe brunch at The Breakfast Klub, then tacos from Tacos Doña Lena. Birria is a must! One night we’d grab late dinner at Whataburger for that real H-Town energy, and another at Taste Kitchen + Bar for a more elevated vibe. Now if we’re talking crawfish, we’re definitely hitting up Mike’s Seafood.
During the day, we’d explore Discovery Green or hit Buffalo Bayou Park to take in the skyline and sunset. Maybe even do one of those paint and sip classes! Always super fun for a girls night out.
For nightlife, we’d grab drinks in Montrose, possibly hitting up Postino or stop by Flight Club for a fun night out. Houston is diverse, creative, and full of flavor — so the week would really be about good food, good people, and good energy!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d dedicate this to my parents, partner, and best friends. They’ve been my foundation from the beginning — always motivating me, always reminding me that I’m on the right path. On the days when I question myself, they’re the ones who reinforce that what I’m building is special and meaningful. Their belief in me pushes me to keep growing and striving for more.
