We had the good fortune of connecting with Jawon Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jawon, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I love art and drawing and It has always been a passion of mine to make an impact on peoples lives and businesses through my art.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been good at drawings and copying anything that I see. Ever since I was in high school, I was always told that I should be a Architect, Drafter, Artist, or Graphic Designer. So by the time I got to college, I decided to try out all those things. I first started doing architecture, but I was afraid of doing it because of the challenges I knew that were coming along with it. As far as, getting licensed and taking series of tests because when you are designing and putting up buildings you name and reputation are on the line and if something bad happens with the building or design stage then it could fall on you. One of my professors, who eventually became one of my mentors, talked me into trying out graphic design. Once I started with my classes and actually designing for clients while I was in school. I fell in love with it right away. The things I have always loved the most about design is that. I love seeing the designs I create for people have a impact on there business and lives. With the designs that I create, I feel that the designs are a great representation of my clients goals and mission statements. Some lessons that I have learned along the way are that everyone is different and the way I look and view things, will not be the same as the other person or client. There have been times were the designs I create didn’t look good with my clients but at the end of the day. It is their business and brand, so as long as I am contributing and helping their business then that is all that matters.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love trying out different foods, like Ramen or Japanese barbecue places so we would go to multiple places to try out different foods along with getting drinks from the bar.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my professors at Prairie View A&M University for guiding me and helping me hone my skills to where they are today. I also would like to thank the members of my organization (Epsilon Gamma Iota) for helping me mature into the person that I am today.
