We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmyne Byrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmyne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started The Divah Filez because I wanted to give back to the community that gave me so much. I’am a product of Central State University a small HBCU in Wilberforce, Ohio. I absolutely loved my time there, the relationships that I built and the family structure. Once I got into my journalism career, I wanted to reach back and give back. It was important for me to create a company that focused of helping students and give them experience in this fields. The HBCU community that is undeserved and very often overlooked and my company put us at the forefront.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My major in college was psychology and the goal was to become a clinical psychiatrist however journalism became my calling. Writing has vastly became something I love to do. I’m excited that I get to help mold future journalist to express their voice and learn all the areas of journalism. Creating The Divah Filez has been my greatest accomplishment to date. My interns are inspiring and I love each of them both new and old. They challenge me to go harder, daily. But by no means is it easy, it’s no easy task to be an entrepreneur. It’s long days and nights, lots of traveling, minimal sleep and at times you want to give up. But you can’t, you have to stay prayed up and in the word of God daily.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My besties are simple like me! We hitting the spa and a good restaurant. Relaxing is just the best and always a good time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Al West was my high school teacher and College Dean. He was a great father figure while I was in school. He stayed on me and gave me tough love. He was my reality check because he had the permission to check me if I was messing up. He pushed me and challenged me. For that i’am grateful.
