We had the good fortune of connecting with Jelly Ellington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jelly, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say that I’ve personally found success by being sincere with my music and always sticking to what I love. The writing and recording process is the most fun part because that’s when I really get to dig deep in to the essence of what makes me feel alive as a human being, and that’s playing rock n’ roll music.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a full-time touring musician, and have recently released my sophomore full-length album ”Not All Who Wander Are Lost.” I was most excited to release the album on vinyl, as my music can have a bit of a throwback vibe. The album gets to the heart of my love for guitar-driven blues and rock n’ roll music. I would say my background as a classical guitarist was a very solid foundation in the beginning of my musical quest, and I feel that’s what sets me a part from other rock guitarists. I got to where I am today from playing in bands my whole life, some where I only played guitar, and some where I took the role as the lead singer and guitarist. I love to collaborate with other musicians in the studio and on stage, and having my own project allows me to freely do so. Touring has been quite a challenge in these past couple of years, but when I’m finally up on stage doing what I love all those challenges seem to go away because it’s totally worth it and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I would say that the main reason I do this is to carry on the torch of rock n’ roll through my music, and inspire the next generation to pick up an instrument, because the world is such a better place with music, especially live music.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Austin, TX, so I would say if you were visiting for a weekend I would grab dinner at Terry Blacks BBQ, then drinks after at one of my favorite bars Tiki Tatsuya, it’s a cool immersive island paradise experience. Then go hit Barton Springs for a few hours to cool off, and grab a margarita at Guero’s Taco Bar. The Far Out Lounge or Empire Garage is a great place to catch local live music, definitely catch a show at ACL Live to see headliner acts as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a HUGE shoutout to Lauren Santorio with Renzo Designs for all her stellar poster artwork, logo design, T-Shirt design, Vinyl Artwork, Music Videos, and more. She does it all for us and is extremely pro. Check out her work and services at renzodesigns.com.
