We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
This is a great question, because I have been thinking about this A LOT lately. I feel for the most part over these last fourteen years I have been overly cautious. Lately though, especially post 2020, I have been feeling the need to be bold. I am watching so many makers and creatives of a younger generation be so audacious in their goals for their businesses. It’s inspiring! I am not naturally a risk taker, but having thrived despite these last two years of uncertainty, supply chain shortages, and pricing increases, I have felt a calling to take more risks!
These last two years I have launched new products, and designs that have been living in my head for quite some time. They have been happily welcomed by my community and clients!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a love for all things visual. I began as a dual photographer and graphic designer, and for me its always about color, and creativity. I try to differentiate myself by always thinking of whats NEXT rather then what’s NOW.
The bulk of my business is personalized goods, taking someone’s theme or vision and elevating the whimsy and fun. Though what makes me the most proud is when I take a vision of my own idea and launch it as a product. When that product is well received it brings me the greatest joy.
It’s taken me years to get over imposter syndrome, especially as a self-trained graphic artist. You see so many incredibly talented peers out there, especially in the social media realm. I am a big advocate for positive self-talk, it’s just too easy to compare to other’s success and get trapped in that energy. Once I focus on my work, my clients, my success, I usually get back on track. I’ve learned so much over these years, most of all it’s to trust myself, trust my success.
The mission of my band is to celebrate the joys in life. Any occasion can be a celebration, it’s about focusing on the positive and enjoying each milestone life gives you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is so big! It would be hard to limit it to one spot, so I’ll focus on what I know best, my hometown The Woodlands. When I have guests visit I usually recommend exploring our township and all its details.
Most of my friends have kids like myself, and in The Woodlands there’s so much to do for families!
First we’d have to visit The Woodlands Waterway, where we would take a swan boat ride, explore the art benches and mosaics, and wrap up with a picnic at Town Green park!
We would absolutely check out a concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and if the weathers really great we could even sit on the lawn.
We would take a walk or bike ride on one of our many trails here. For dining and shopping we’d visit Market Street. It’s also kid friendly with its spray park, and live music!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, absolutely. I have been in business so long there are so many who have championed my journey. I’m so thankful to my very first clients who took a chance when I was learning, and have remained loyal and supportive al these years.
My neighbors, friends, and fellow volunteers, in The Woodlands, a very close-knit community. All who have been my promoters, supporters, loyal fans, who choose to support LOCAL!
My closest friends who stop drop and help when I am in need of a helping hand.
Most of all my husband and children who support, work, and sacrifice so I can explore my dream as a creative.
