We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I have formed habits taught to me long ago by my grandmother, and that is to be diligent, work hard, and never give up. I was always taught that if you are going to do something, then do the best you can to succeed at whatever you are trying to accomplish. So that taught me to be a hard worker and be diligent in all that I do in my life. But most of all to never give up, because failure just means to pick yourself up and try again.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others is my love for people. I educate people how to buy a home for themselves or to invest in properties that will create generational wealth. This makes people feel a lot more comfortable when they start the process, because most people are too nervous to get started. This in turn creates an atmosphere of learning, In the end, people are more comfortable with the process and realize they might want to purchase again to build a life they want for them and their families.
My business today is flourishing in more ways than I could have ever imagined. The road to being a Broker and owning my own company (not a branch of a larger bank or broker) was not easy at all! I had to pay my time for sure and definitely put in the work from 2006 to present. Back then we did not have social media, so to start a full time commission based job, you really had to get yourself out there. I would go to stores, dry cleaners, any events, or functions and just pass out so many cards. The amount of cards I went through was unreal. But now that I look back on it, me grinding my feet to the pavement as it were and getting my name out there via word of mouth is what paid off. I look back and think I never thought I would own my own company in the mortgage industry, let alone still be here so many years later. When the fall of the real estate market happened back in 2008-2010, I lost so many colleagues because we were forced to learn the new rules and take our test again. The test was made even harder than it was at first. But thank God, I studied and passed it the first time again like I did my first test and you know Texas makes all the tests hard to take. So that test took so many people out of loans at that time. I want to say it went from maybe 30,000 loan officers to less than 7,000 left. So to be able to stand the test of time and then stop working for other brokers and become my own broker is definitely a blessing. Today Turn-Key Mortgage, Inc. is a small but growing business here in the Houston Metroplex area serving all of Texas. We are able to help finance more than what people may know….from houses to churches and gas stations. I want people who work with us at Turn-Key to know we care and we will go above and beyond in customer service to make sure your needs are met and the expectations are top tier. I want people to tell their families, workmates, colleagues, and strangers in the store about this small broker shop that will take good care of you and help walk you through purchasing any type of real estate property and that your goals are met!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my goodness, being a really, really proud native Houstonian there are just so many spots to take anyone. A lot of people like to fancy every bar and brand new establishment because there are so many but I personally hit the more quieter spots. But for food to eat and drink, it depends on your tastes because with Houston being so diverse, I eat all types of food. For Indian I’d say Aga’s or Pondicheri. For seafood, I am not going to lie, I still LOVE Pappadeaux! I know there are so many out there now but again I am just one of those old school natives of Houston that stick with what has always been good. I also love Turkey Leg Hut, which is known worldwide now and so you have to go there just to say you went LOL….If I want to go have drinks, again I am pretty chill and I know there are tons of places to go to but me personally I’d prefer the “blue door” or the Sugar Room. If you are from here, then you would know the blue door, it was one of the first speakeasy’s I knew about as I started to venture out and explore the city as a young adult. But if there are any shows, museums, festivals, etc….I will definitely do those as well. And if all else fails just check my friend out on Instagram Ikem @indmix – he will definitely have ALL the places to go to for that week/weekend!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My person of recognition would have to be my husband, Dorian Brown! Everything I try to tackle in life, he says go for it! He is very supportive and helps me to be positive and think of ways to be successful, especially when I am not.
