We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Barton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea to begin a fashion consulting company came to me in stages. Fashion has always been a major part of my life, from watching wide-eyed as a small child while my mom and aunt got dressed up for parties and concerts to sketching gowns and separates after I finished my homework. When the pandemic started, I quickly found myself without one of my regular forms of expression and release, getting dressed before leaving the house. I wasn’t leaving the house so I lost that hour or so from my day where I plan my outfit and accessories and just focus on myself. As a result I started a fashion based conversation on Instagram Live called Closet Chronicles with beauty blogger, Keri Kontours. I started getting a lot of questions from friends about how to style outfits and I really enjoyed helping people put their looks together. I felt a lot of satisfaction after those interactions. That’s when I thought, “Maybe I can turn this into something.” Then I did some polling to understand if this was even a viable endeavor to branch out into. Would I even have clients? The answer was ‘yes’. Now JL fashion Consulting is up and running and I couldn’t be happier. The motivation is largely intrinsic.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
JL Fashion Consulting is still a new business and I’m a one woman operation. The challenge that comes with that is time. I have a limited number of openings each month because I want to give the appropriate time and attention to each client. Each client is a priority. Your birthday photoshoot is as important to me as it is to you so I’m going to take the time to make sure your vision is achieved.

It’s a challenge but I don’t consider it an obstacle. I’m clear with my clients and potential clients about my availability and we make the best choices for them to accommodate their needs.

I am a life long fashion lover with a very simple mission: to help people experience the confidence and energy that comes with a well put together outfit. Fashion and styling does not have to be complicated. JL Fashion Consulting is about helping you define or refine your style and empowering you to make fashion decisions that will make you feel as good as you look.

I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am in this solely for the love of fashion and the love of seeing that spark in the eyes of my clients when they try on the outfits I’ve styled for them. That’s what I want people to know about my brand. I want clients to come to me because they know I want to help them be excited about what they’re wearing. I want to help them tap into that next level of confidence.

Whether its styling for everyday wear, a return to the office, a special event, shopping for clients who don’t have the time to shop for themselves, or pairing down a closet, my goal is to make the entire styling process easy.

Currently, I’m most excited about being in holiday season. That means people are looking for what to wear to parties, for greeting card photos, and NYE celebrations. I love this time of year because the fashion is so fun and over the top. I’m very excited to get to work on some holiday looks.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first place I take anyone visiting Houston is El Big Bad; the food is great and so are the margaritas. Then we’ll take some pictures at the graffiti park and maybe some bar hopping in Edo later that night. If we have a week, then I’m taking them on a tour of my favorite bars and restaurants: Wooster’s Garden, Sunset, Playground, State Fare, Mala Sichuan to name a few. I feel like there’s always a festival of some sort happening so I’d add one to the itinerary to round things out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who deserve recognition here. The first shoutout has to go to my aunt who was my first example of a fashionable woman. Second are my RoR friends for their unwavering support. Finally, my very first client, Sarah thank you for trusting me to help bring your vision to life.
