We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Turpin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Everything has to have a story. We are a “modern day general store” which means we sell everything from fresh bread to earrings, beauty products, kids toys, even socks. Our motto is to have something for everyone and supplies for breakfast/lunch/dinner and in between. We pick products that our true to my partner and I, that mean something to us, made from good people who are trying to make the world a better place. We get to know our makers and are then able to tell their story, why they do what they do and why it resonates with us. It’s amazing to see how that resonates with our customers, making the overall shopping experience deeper and more enriching.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have struggled for years with the term “artist”. Taken literally, it can be intimidating to call yourself one. Now at 50, I am finally ok saying, I am an artist and a deeply creative person. I take that creativity into everything I do, even real estate. You have to be creative sometimes, especially in this market, to sell houses. Being an artist doesn’t only mean you paint or sculpt or photograph or what have you, it’s a way of looking at the world and wanting, needing, to express yourself in a creative way. Whether in real estate, or through Branch Home or even through the bluegrass festival, it all boils down to creative expression and wanting to share that with the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard one but my gut reaction: I actually love our little corner of the world in the Northeast, there is so much to do here so I would probably create an itinerary that captures all of the facets of the Northeast starting with home.
First night at my house with close friends making a big dinner, listening to music and having a bonfire if it’s a nice night.
I would add a trip to NYC to see some live music and do dinner at one the amazingly ridiculous restaurants that are there. Usually some place small that is aesthetically as beautiful as the food is delicious.
Ending with a trip upstate like Hudson or Rhinebeck to do some shopping and have some one on one spa time to really connect.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband John is my partner in everything. I am a passionate person and see opportunity everywhere I look. Not necessarily business opportunity (although you can see that I wear many hats and have a few different businesses) but I am always recognizing beauty in things and wanting to create around it, Whether it be a song, a floral arrangement, a lamp or an experience or class to share with our customers at Branch, it’s hard to turn my brain off. John is the one I tell most of these, sometimes hairbrained, ideas to and he is very supportive to most of them!
