We had the good fortune of connecting with John Daniels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My wife and I were inspired to design and manufacture lighting when we came up empty in our own search for lighting to fill our newly renovated home. We really wanted quality lighting that was also unique. As a licensed electrician, I knew I could figure out the electrical components. After a bit of trial and error, we handcrafted all of the light fixtures for our home. Encouraged by family and friends who visited our home, we founded J Knox Designs in 2013.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Other than being a family owned business, I’m most proud of the quality of our light fixtures and that we handcraft them in Texas. We’re inspired by the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and longevity of products made long ago. We strive to create premium quality light fixtures that can be enjoyed for generations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we wanted to show our best friends the best time ever, we would take them to eat at Katz BBQ (the absolute best bbq), then we would head to Galveston to watch taffy being made at La Kings and while there, grab a milk shake, do a little shopping on the Strand and hit up the Kitchen Chick, then take a stroll on the beach and finish the day off eating a delicious dinner at Blvd Seafood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest cheerleader has always been my wife, Courtney. Our family business would not exist without her.
