We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Spruill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was to make sure the next generation that comes along in the dance and fashion industry has more resources and opportunities than we did. I also wanted to continue the legacy of pure talent that’s breeds from Virginia. Its very hard to pursue a career in this field because we aren’t supported as much compared to other formal jobs and side hustles. Both industries are seen less than side hustle as if there isn’t more than enough work, dedication, and drive out into the profession as others. Artists have proven for many years that it is a well driven complex talent that deserves more representation.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
To describe my art in a lump sum I’d say that it is a breath of fresh air, edgy, precise no matter what genre it falls under. I like to focus on clarity and quality when creating my works because it not only brings more attention to it but also enlightens the story being told. The journey of a dance artist is a rollercoaster to say the least. You start off slow and steady then once you start networking, training effectively, and gaining results of success it becomes enjoyable. Not to say that it isn’t but sometimes it’s frightening but also fun because it’s a passion and if you really want it you’ll keep fighting for it. Eventually it’ll become your favorite ride and you will ride in the first row, front seat. I’ve learned quite a bit along the way but the most important things you should take note of as a dancer is being on time, stretching and taking care of your body, network until you can’t network anymore, and take that risk. Time waits for nobody, so move strategically, be authentic and plan ahead.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend is in town and I’ve planned a week long of adventurous yet relaxing activities and mouth watering food places. First stop, the yard in Va beach. Having to choose from 10+ different ice cream combinations with your custom toppings is top tier and definitely a great choice to kick off the week. After that we would go a little further down to the beach area and walk the strip, maybe get a couple of souvenirs. Next day follows, we are still pumped and just about ready to head over to Granby St in downtown Norfolk,Va. There are a lot of restaurants/bars to choose from but I had to make sure that my best friends tries a few of my favorite places and split it up into the rest of week. Sushi king for the current day, Canvas Social Cuisine for the night, Hells Kitchen for the following day and Culture Lounge Restaurant for Friday. As the week is coming to an end we’d be quite exhausted but I can’t let him leave with going to Apex in Virginia Beach and topping the night off with Bahama Breeze if we’re not too tired and full.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to first and foremost shoutout God because without him I would not be where I am today. Through faith, perseverance, and doing the work I am able to accomplish and pursue a lot of my aspirations. Secondly I would like to applaud my immediate family for being my biggest support system throughout my journey as a dancer. This type of industry isn’t for the weak and at times it can get very rough and I am grateful to have that extra light of reassurance, comfort, and undeniable love from my family.
