We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Bui and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
First and foremost, make art for yourself. Use art as a medium to express your inner self and what matters to you. Art has the power to create social action, influence, entertain, and educate the world. This principle is very important to me because it pushes me to stay true to artist I am and the art I make.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work as a photographer has always been about my interest in storytelling on topics of relationships between people, community, identity, culture, and the theme of “home.” I like to be an observer and a listener to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the topics I work with. What I am most proud of is my recent series about my own family in Houston, Texas through his photo book and series, “I Love You. I Miss You. Have A Good Day.”

I consider myself still emerging and still learning how to become a “professional.” I got to where I am today by being open to learn, to challenges, and to grow from failures. If you embrace your failures, then you taking big steps towards growing and being successful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always been a big fan of Chinatown on Bellaire. It’s my go to spot of great asian food, drinks, and dessert. I find myself there occasionally with new storefronts opening up promoting hype trends, such as thematic ice cream flavors and specialty drinks. Chinatown in Katy is booming as well with the same vibe. I am a big foodie and trying new places to eat for meals and desserts.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am where I am today thanks to the support, mentorship, and love of countless people in my life. I am forever grateful for all my mentors and peers for their advice and encouragement. To my friends, thank you for following me through my journey as a photographer and cheering me on as I grow. Specifically, I thank my family for being my role models and being my models for my portraits.
