We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Dillard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I think one piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is “If you believe it you can achieve it”. I believe that statement needs a lot more context because it sounds so simple. But is belief truly that simple? If I merely “think” it can I achieve it? I don’t think so. That’s not real life. Your thoughts have to manifest into action. Belief is a combination of two things: Imagination & Execution. Without imagination, you won’t be excited and energized enough to execute. Without execution, you will never manifest what you imagined. True belief is followed by action. If your belief doesn’t compel you to action then you have to question if you REALLY believe.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a content creator and entrepreneur, I know how hard it can be to be bubbling with so many new ideas and wanting to see each and every one of them come to life. This is something I’ve struggled with in business: the gift of being “good” at so many things.
But being a creative entrepreneur offers me the best of both worlds. My creativity allows me to be passionate about my business. As an entrepreneur each one of our journeys is different. For me, passion is a huge part of my productivity over an extended period of time. If I’m not passionate about it, I have a hard time focusing. But we all know that passion alone isn’t enough. You also need discipline.
The entrepreneurial side of me makes me exercise discipline so that I’m not distracted by every new thing or idea that comes along. It also helps because there are times when I’m depleted of my passion. I’m tired and burnt out, discipline is essential in those moments. That’s what running a successful business takes, it takes passion, patience, and discipline.
One of the greatest things I’ve learned on my entrepreneurial journey is the ability to say “no”. Even if I’m saying “no” to myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my guests to eat at The Breakfast Club, and hit the golf course in Humble. Enjoy some evening festivities and live music at Five Central.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this interview to my mom, my dads, family, and closest friends. I thrive because I’m energized by my community. I wouldn’t be here without them.
