We had the good fortune of connecting with Autumn Conditt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Autumn, what do you attribute your success to?
I feel that my brand has become so successful because of who I am as a person. Although some people may not realize it, getting your hair braided is a very intimate experience because you spend hours with your client. I am able to get along with anyone, and I feel that everyone that you meet serves a purpose. I always learn something new or gain a different perspective on things from my clients. I always listen, and allow them to talk about whatever is on their mind. They always come in as a client, and leave as a friend. My clients are able to confidently recommend me to other people because they know that they will be comfortable, have a good time, and that their hair will be flawless every time! Something so simple as being a genuine person can get you a very long way!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The biggest lesson I learned along the way is to keep your dreams to yourself until you are strong enough to defend them.

I moved to Houston last May. When I moved here, I had no intentions of being a braider or doing hair at all. It just happened, and was god’s plan. When I first started talking about wanting to take hair seriously so many people, even some of those closest to me, tried to persuade me to not do hair because it is not reliable, or because I did not know anyone in Houston, etc. When I moved here I did not know one person… But, I always thank god for not letting me give up on being a braider because it has made me a better person. I have met so many amazing people, made a lot of friends, and overall just learned how to better interact with others. Building a brand from the ground up is not easy at all, especially in a city where you are not from. There are a lot of late nights, early mornings, self-doubts, failures, money lost, etc. But, I just feel like if you don’t take those risks you will always just work for someone who does. I am really excited to see where hair takes me, and how I will be able to use hair to help and empower others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is an amazing city, with so many things to do! There are a ton of good places to eat, some of my favorites that I would make sure to take my friends are BB’s Tex Orleans, Mikki’s Soul Food, Lost and Found, Taste of Nigeria, Turkey Leg Hut and Taste Bar. When it comes to just hanging out, there is definitely something for everyone to do. I really enjoy going to the Discovery Green, pop up shops, food truck parks, shopping at the Galleria, or walking around downtown and trying new things.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give some credit to my best friend, Cortnie. When we were in college, I always used to only do her hair and she is the one who helped me to realize that hair is something that I was talented at. She helped me gain enough confidence to put myself out there when I thought that I was not good enough to do hair. She helped me to realize that hair was truly my passion. I also have to shoutout my mom for investing in my brand early on, and being my biggest fan. She always reposts my work, and talks about how far I’ve come with braiding and being my own boss and seeing her so proud of me… that keeps me going.
