We had the good fortune of connecting with Jourdan Laws and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jourdan, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all began with a personal experience that unfolded naturally. My husband and I made an announcement on Instagram in 2018 that we were starting the process to adopt domestically. As I shared updates about the process, I started receiving messages from other Black women who were facing similar challenges with infertility or were unsure where to begin with adoption. I took time providing them with helpful resources and serving as a compassionate sounding board because I understood the lack of understanding they faced in their own lives.
Eventually, I assumed responsibility for a Black adoption support group on Facebook. The original creator of the group decided not to pursue adoption but didn’t want to delete the community entirely. Recognizing my dedication to answering questions and supporting fellow members, she approached me and offered me the opportunity to take over. As word spread about the group, adoption professionals from various states began reaching out to me because they were working with an expectant mom that was looking for Black/biracial or interracial hopeful adoptive parents for her child.
This process has shown me that there was a genuine need for support and guidance in the Black adoption community, and I have been fortunate enough to fulfill that need through the connections formed by sharing my own story.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At NoireAdoption.com, our work is centered around empowering Black/biracial and interracial hopeful adoptive parents through domestic infant adoption. What sets us apart is our commitment to cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in every aspect of adoption. We take pride in our personalized approach, tailored resources, and community-driven support network that celebrates the unique heritage of Black culture. We are most excited about creating lasting connections and witnessing the joy of families coming together through adoption, guided by love and understanding.
It has been both rewarding and challenging. I wasn’t intending on breaking into the adoption field, especially with a focus on serving Black families. I was going to be a fitness and wellness branding photographer. However, I overcame challenges and self-doubt by remaining persistent, staying true to the mission, and building strong partnerships within the adoption community. The key lessons I’ve learned include the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the value of building a supportive network. I also believe that what is meant for me will come and I just need to stay the course. Clearly, this is what I’m meant to be doing so I will be here to serve my community in the best way I can.
We want the world to know that NoireAdoption.com is more than just an adoption platform – we are advocates for change and inclusivity in the adoption landscape. Our brand stands for celebrating and prioritizing diversity, empowering Black families, and ensuring that every child finds a loving and supportive forever home with people that understand them. Our story is one of passion and dedication to creating positive outcomes for adoptive families and children. Through our work, we aim to inspire others to embrace cultural diversity in the adoption industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We just moved back to Houston after being out of state for a few years so I don’t know what to recommend.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before I launched Noire Adoption, I was a member of the Momentum Mastermind, a photography business support group, led by Dr. Tomayia Colvin. Although I eventually closed my photography business, the valuable lessons I learned in the mastermind continue to motivate me. Through the mastermind, I gained insights on how to improve my website copy, shift my mindset, and carve out a unique niche in the market.
In addition to the mastermind, my aunt has played a significant role in my business. With over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, she runs her own business called Asali Consulting. Her expertise lies in assisting individuals who are interested in establishing nonprofit organizations, streamlining their operations, and clarifying their mission. She provided invaluable guidance and support in registering Noire Adoption as a nonprofit entity.
