We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaleb Allison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaleb, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There are a few reasons why I decided to start my business, most of all I realized that I didn’t want to be stuck in the monday-Friday 9-5 work schedule going back and forth to a mundane job. Not because I am afraid to work, but because I really wanted to be able to do something that would give me the ability to spend more time with my kids. I feel that the more time I can spend with them physically being there is far more valuable than I high paying corporate position.
The second reason would be the community. Growing up my dad was a pastor and with that came a whole bunch of different types of community outreach. Anywhere from sweeping someone’s floor to removing fallen trees, or even gutting flooded houses after hurricane Harvey. With that, as we grow as a business I will be coming up with new ways to pull the community together as a whole. There will be family focused fun, as well as plenty of events for those who may not have family. One thing I know for sure is our goal is to make sure everyone feels like family.
And lastly, FRESHNESS. After moving to Texas City and working at Boyds One Stop it changed how I saw seafood altogether. Once you eat fresh shrimp right off the boat, you can’t ever go back to that farm raised stuff. We have partnered with Boyd’s One Stop and get all of our products exclusively from them to insure that fresh wild caught quality seafood can be distributed to the Magnolia area.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Getting to the place we are today has been like going on a roller coaster without securing yourself in first, one of the scariest yet somehow most fun things I have ever done. I think back to the beginning and sometimes I honestly can not believe we have made it even this far. From waking up at 2am every day for 7 months straight during crawfish season and getting to bed no sooner than 11pm insuring I only got a max of 3 hours sleep a night. driving 4 hours round trip to pick up product daily and even stuff as simple as accidentally over sleeping. One of the biggest things I have taken away from this entire experience is no matter how many hours of sleep you get, how long you had to drive to get there, no matter the day of the week, do yourself a favor and really be there. The moments are gone fast and don’t come back. It’s easy to get lost on auto pilot when your exhausted, running on fumes, but more often than not that is when the best things can happen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would go out to this little place called the treehouse cafe for a nice classic breakfast and coffee then go around downtown conroe to the little shops until around 1 where we take a late lunch at the moco food hall in Conroe. After lunch we would go back to the house and relax for a bit before going out to the moonshine deck in magnolia for a nice meal from the food truck and then enjoy a few drinks on the patio before wrapping up back at the house by the fire. Each day of the week would be lined out similar to this, of course some days we would skip the shops and take the jeep on a trail or go shoot at the range.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think I would only be fair that three people be recognized for the tremendous amount of support, encouragement and guidance during this adventure. That would be both of my parents Homer Allison and Robin Allison. As well as my good friend and owner of Boyd’s One Stop, Jason Cogburn.
Without these three amazing people behind me, this would have been impossible.
