We had the good fortune of connecting with Kali Jefferson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kali, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way that risk taking has played a role in my career as a Makeup Artist, is never confining myself or my artistry into one box. I always try to take calculated risks, follow my intuition, and also put my trust in God in all my workings. This makes the risks I take end up just naturally flowing as if they were carefully curated in the first place. I enjoy taking risks in my career because it allows room to do something unique that has never been done before, thus leaving the world in a more beautiful state than I found it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It all started with having supportive friends and mentors in my circle who believed in me and saw potential in my artistry. That support nudged me to start taking it on more seriously, eventually I began taking on homecoming and prom clients, along the way got in touch with some upcoming photographers on the Houston scene who loved my work and would bring me on set as their preferred artist, and doors began opening for me to work big weddings and commercial jobs. Since then, I’ve been a full time freelance MUA.
The road hasn’t been easy and it’s certainly been tough to keep my faith in myself strong at times. But I never for a second will think this isn’t where I’m meant to be. God has opened so many doors for me that I never knew were possible so far.
I overcome challenges by keeping God first and pushing through the long hard days with gratitude in my heart.
A huge lesson I’ve learned along the way is always staying coachable and open to ideas and techniques in this industry. You’re never truly finished learning and that’s the beauty of this industry, there isn’t just one way of doing things, everybody has something unique and amendable to learn from.
What I want the world to know about my brand, is that there is so much more to come in the future! and I am so blessed and excited everyday to being able to use my gift to touch peoples lives and make their days a little more beautiful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend out to midtown to go clubbing and Galveston Pleasure Pier for some summer fun in the sun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Growing up in the beauty industry with my mom being a model and single mother, I would go on sets with her a lot as a kid. I would see all kinds of unique looking individuals, makeup artists, and hairstylists backstage at fashion shows or photoshoots making people look amazing. Even when I began dabbling in the modeling industry myself , they unknowingly inspired this shy, artistic, little girl to soon follow her dream of being an artist.
This allowed me to fall in love with the behind the scenes of it all, and inspired me when I grew up, to look at people as a blank canvas, to make them look and even more importantly feel amazing! All while expressing myself, the authenticity, and unique flair of my craft. Even if just for a moment, I want everybody to feel as beautiful, confident, and empowered as I did when I was a just little girl getting my makeup done by some of my favorite Houston MUAs of that time.
Special shout out to Heather Hughes!
