We had the good fortune of connecting with Kanise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kanise, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
Taking a break in releasing products to hire a manufacturer was the most difficult decision I had to make for my brand. When I first started The Roseprint I sewed everything by myself. My brand grew faster than I expected and it quickly became too much for one person. I had to make the decision to take a long break to hire a manufacturer. As an artist this was a very difficult decision because releasing my products is what makes me happy and keeps me feeling fulfilled.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Roseprint is more than a clothing line, it’s a lifestyle. Not only are my collections unique and timeless but they highlight black women being feminine. A long time ago the world decided we were allowed to be but The Roseprint is here to show everyone otherwise. Each collection is well thought out from the colors, to the fabric, down to the story behind the collection. Not only are we focusing on feminine and classy pieces but we offer sizes XS-5X. We want women of all sizes to feel beautiful, womanly and confident when they wear our pieces. I can’t name one brand like mine.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Six Flags has to be on the itinerary when my best friend comes to visit. I love amusement parks and that gives us an entire day to experience the thrill of rides, eat turkey legs, and drink giants cups of lemonade. Me and my best friend love upscale dining experiences so our foos options are Artisans, Bludorn, and my personal favorite: Kiss. I love art so we of course will visit The Museum of Fine Arts here in Houston. To end our nights (morning really) we go to Prospect Park night club followed by an after hours taco truck.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shout out my late great grandmother Edwina. She is the reason I am a fashion designer. She was a seamstress all her life and when I was 5 she taught me how to sew. She had a whole suitcase filled with sewing items just for me. I wanted to be a designer since that day and I never changed my mind.
