We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I think one of the most important life lessons i’ve learned over the years is to believe in yourself and what you have to offer. From a young age I knew i wanted to model, act or do something creative. I was always involved in some form of art or entertainment. I was at a loss of how to make my dream career come true to a point i was prepared to give up on my dream. I took a moment to weight my options and what i wanted for myself and my life. I decided that before i give up completely that i would go for it one last time with everything that I had. I would market myself, work on my portfolio and give it my best. Within weeks I was getting booked for paid gigs, won my first pageant and went to a national pageant that opened up many doors for me to succeed. I have since then invested into myself and my business, building it up one step at a time. The single most important decision I made was believing in myself and my worth.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently a full time model, I travel to different states to work. I have had the pleasure of being published over 200 times, some in small magazines, some of a larger caliber. I do brand work as well as artistic visionary work, I have done runway, commercial and promotional work over my 11 years in the industry. The entertainment industry runs on reputation and connections with people of a similar interest, showing your skill and reliability over time. Making yourself into a professional means thinking like a professional, how you come across online, how you interact with people, having and respecting your own boundaries and most important, your goals for your profession and yourself. One of the biggest lessons I have learned and think is important for other people to know is to keep going no matter what other people say, learn your industry, every bit of it, and take every opportunity. I have been able to take my love for the industry and expand into other areas such as writing a book and developing a coaching service to help up and coming models navigate the industry and grow their skill set through one-on-one sessions.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I enjoy spending time downtown, theres a ton of shops and cute restaurants to check out. One of my favorites is Hersay’s Chic Antique, they have fantastic food, a great atmosphere and spirited drinks. During the day we’d try out a few of the popular brunch and breakfast spots like Toasted Yolk, during the day i would take them to check out the art museum one day and of course the space center is a must being that NASA is near by. The nightlife of Houston is full of vibrance from Downtown fun to Walking around the Heights.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my parents. No matter what ups and downs we have been experienced, the support that i have always received from them is never ending. They don’t agree with everything I do and how I do it, but they are always rooting for me to win.
